When i say varsity sports are a big part of campus life i mean that the midshipman participate heavily in them. but there is not much watching the sports, except for mandatory football games. but nearly every single person is in a varsity sport.

I personally enjoy campus a lot, it is very attractive and all the buildings look old on the outside but most have been fully renovated within the decade. the academy has a magnificent chapel and waterfront view of NYC

you don't need a scholar ship to go here, it would cost your parents or your self more money to feed and clothe you than to pay your small school fees
College Sophomore 2013-11-14T18:55:51Z
school is very remote, in a suburb, but is a 37 minute, and 9 dollar train ride from New York City, so there is that

I don't really know how you rate diversity , personally i don't care if i see lots of people of the same race, i am indifferent but when rating the school on amount of diversity id give it a low score but that doesn't affect the atmosphere of the school
College Sophomore 2013-11-14T18:52:43Z
It is a service academy with lots of rules and regulations, you don't pay for school so it is a simple inconvenience
College Sophomore 2013-11-14T18:51:35Z
Only seniors can have cars, there is no real need to have one as an freshman, you walk to all classes, cars are for weekend activities
College Sophomore 2013-11-14T18:50:24Z

You must live on campus for 3 years. in military like barracks, BUT you get used to it and ive become very fond of the rooms and how close you are to your fellow classmates.
They are 1940s building that have all been remodels in the last 8 years. so they look cool on the outside but are modern on the inside

We are required to buy a certian computer for about 900 dollars, it is a Dell PC, and it is great.
You do not need a printer of your own, the library offers free black and white printing .
The dorms are not wireless but the ethernet is very fast. academic buildings and the library are wireless.

I am a marine transportation and logistics major. I go out on practice cruises to test my navigation abilities, as well as use simulators. The technology and hands on aspects are amazing.
My teachers are almost all Master Mariners and know the ins and outs of the career.

There are alot of complaints in the teachers that come up commonly. But i generally disagree with them. The teachers and staff at USMMA are amazing, they are excellent in their feilds and are willing to go to the end of the earth for you as long as you ASK them!
We have teachers that have second jobs with NOAA, CIA,NSA as well as are chair people of shipping corporations, they know there stuff.

I do not have a need for parking because i live on campus. But the parking is reasonable, permits are free if you show proof of registration and insurance.ut spots in the parking lot usually fill up, but close street parking is available.

There are many clubs and night life activities near the Merchant Marine Academy because of our location being so close to New York City. There are no school parties so most of the time students go off campus to other schools like St Johns to party.

Wake Me up in Great Neck – The train station is a short car ride and even accesible by walking by those with an hour or so. from there you can get virtually anywhere with a little creativity.

Sports Are Everything – almost everyone at the school plays some sort of varsity sport. as kids progress through, sports become a huge part of their focus, only second to academics.

Dorms are average. nothing special to them. each room has two beds, two sinks and not a whole lot of space. the rooms get pretty beat up and it's very tough to get stuff fixed if they break. you learn to live with it tho.

Wide Variety of People. Being a small school, everyone knows everyone. It makes for a great environment. i have never seen a situation when anyone was left out. People range from poor to rich and from all over the country as well as some foreign exchange students.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
