Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Cadets agree that the West Point is probably the strictest campus in the world. There are numerous rules and regulations designed to promote uniformity and discipline. It is everyone’s responsibility to ensure that cadets adhere to standards. Your fellow cadets will not find it funny if you continually fall out of line, let alone what your administrators will think. If one cadet falls out, then others will too, and this makes for an uncomfortable situation with the hierarchy. The entire campus is geared toward order. Anyone who is not entirely complacent makes himself an immediate nuisance.

According to most cadets, as long as you always work hard and listen to authority, you will be alright. There are numerous checks and balances in place that make it difficult for someone to get away with not following the rules. For example, if you are either late to class or fail to keep your room up to standard, you will more than likely be disciplined. The level of strictness is extreme at West Point. By signing on to be a cadet, you basically kiss your right to privacy good-bye. There are routine inspections and drug tests, and a failure to play by the Academy’s rules will not be tolerated.

Gestapo.

Campus strictness is awarded a failing grade because you can literally get away with nothing here at West Point; and that's how it should be. USMA is attempting to mold leaders of character who can lead Soldiers in the battlefield. As a result they will not let the typical college antics go without punishment. For simple things, such as being late to class, there are disproportionate consequences. Punishment is handed out fervently and often, but on the same note is easily avoidable if you stay within the guidelines expected of you.

Its the Military People

Rules and regulations are what this place was built on over 200 years ago, and it still is based on it. You can get dropped for push-ups for forgetting what is on the menu for next week if an upperclassman asks. Thats a pretty easy punishment. The most important rule is the Honor Code: A cadet shall not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.

As a cadet, you are conditioned to do routine things routinely. Everyday is like Groundhog Day. The schedules are very predictable, so it is very easy to establish a pattern. You learn to work smarter, not harder.
