| Advice on Finding a Job/Internship | |
Once you graduate from West Point, you are officially commissioned into the Army, where you start off as a second lieutenant. After one and a half years of serving as a second lieutenant, you get promoted to first lieutenant. As a general rule of thumb, the promotion from first lieutenant to captain is approximately three and a half years. Promotion to major usually comes at the 10 to 11 year mark. When you graduate, assuming that you do not have any medical issues, your job is your duty; for the next five years, you are a commissioned officer in the United States Army. Opportunities at West Point are merit based; they take your academic grades into consideration, but, more importantly, they look at the whole picture. They also take into consideration how bad you want to do something. When you are a sophomore, start to ask a lot of questions about different summer training opportunities. Showing initiative and an interest early will significantly increase the likelihood that you are going to get to do what you want. AIADs or Advanced Individual Academic Developments (internships) are a great opportunity to see the world, get a foot in the door, and also to network.
