The only time that cadets are going to have the opportunity to live off post is either during military training or while conducting an internship. During the majority of the military training, you live either in tents or in bays, so you definitely have to like the outdoors. When you conduct an internship, you will more than likely either stay in a hotel or in college dorms. Other than that, expect to spend a lot of time in the barracks because there is no getting out of them. Get used to it.
One of the things that you have to get used to, not only as a cadet but also as an officer in the army, is the drastic changes in living conditions. At times, you will find yourself living out in the wilderness, not taking a shower for weeks or months. At other times, you will find yourself staying in three- or four-star hotels. At West Point, you often have to trade privacy for convenience and comfortable accommodations. Because of the disciplinary structure of the Academy-one in which the cadets hold much of the power-it is also essential that as many of them as possible live in the barracks at all times.
