College Prowler Take
Although there is crime on and around the campus, students still say they feel safe. Services like “Don’t Walk Alone” and the blue-light phones are just two of the many things the University has done to ensure safety and security. The “Don’t Walk Alone” program is an escort service for any student who does not feel comfortable walking by themself at night. Just dial the number, and someone will meet you at your dorm to escort you safely to your destination. The blue-light phones are located all over campus, like in parking lots, residence halls, on the academic Podium, and along roadways. They are easily recognized by the blue-light just above the phone box. In an emergency, all a student has to do is open the phone box, pick up the phone, and talk to the University Police Dispatcher on the line. Along with the 911 Emergency System, the blue-lights give students immediate phone access to police, fire, and emergency medical services.
The dorms are kept very safe and are only accessible to students who live in that particular building because of the card-swipe system. Residence hall doors remain locked 24 hours a day. At night, the towers are guarded by security guards. The University Police maintain a very visible presence, day and night. They are constantly patrolling the surrounding roadways, dorm areas, and Podium looking for anything unusual. While the police maintain this strong presence, it is still very important for students to keep their dorm rooms locked and stay aware of their surroundings. Many crimes here are thefts.

The University Police are located...
The University Police are located on campus and are official state officers, not security guards. However, some occurrences of crime do happen on campus, but the response from officers is incredibly quick. There are phone systems located throughout the campus that go directly to the University Police, and there are usually officers stationed around the Quad throughout the day and night.

The blue light system seems to work successfully, but I still hear about plenty of crime both on and off campus.

Do not walk on campus alone at night unless you are around your dorms. There have been a few scary incidents on campus in the past. There are police on campus 24/7 and emergency phones everywhere. |

Security on campus is mediocre. Cops like to give tickets for speeding while driving on campus, so watch out for that! |

Security on campus is very good, and there are blue-light emergency phones everywhere. There are programs like ‘Don’t Walk Alone’ available, so that you never have to walk alone on campus at night. Buildings are only accessible to students with card IDs. I have always felt very safe at Albany. |
