College Prowler Take
Albany nightlife is probably what is so great about going to college in this city. There are at least three bars on every corner in the downtown area. No wonder why Princeton Review named the University at Albany the #1 party school in the country. At times, it may seem as if students spend more of their time planning their nights out than they do planning their future. In an average week, a typical student will go to the bars and clubs on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Bars and clubs have great drink specials during the week. Bars like the Lamp Post, Cagney’s, Pauley’s, and Michael’s are all great places to go. Many upperclassmen tend to steer clear of the “baby” bars and head further downtown, to places like Jillian’s, Mad River, the Big House, Pearl, and the Lark Tavern. All of the bars in Albany stay open until 4 a.m. on the weekends, which makes it easy to “pre-game” before going out and bar-hopping. Students that do not enjoy partying or going to clubs have a more difficult time finding something to do at night. Many choose to check out bands at local venues or catch a late night movie.

Parties on campus are okay for...
Parties on campus are okay for small get-togethers, but off campus is definitely better. There are a whole lot of house parties and all different kinds of clubs and bars available to 18-and-over and 21-and-over students. You'll learn that Quail Street, Hudson Street, and a bunch of other places will become your second home.

If there’s a party on campus, it’s in a dorm, and you can only fit so many people. The biggest party you will ever find on a college campus happens at Albany in April—Fountain Day. This is one of the reasons I came to this school. There is a huge fountain in the middle of campus. On Fountain Day, the water is turned on, and thousands of drunk college kids are all over it. The best part is, it happens at 12 p.m. You haven’t seen a party until you’ve attended Fountain Day. Downtown is a party. There are freshman bars, sophomore bars, and so on. Only freshmen go to the Post. If you want to hook up, go there. You will discover the art of |

They are sick but sometimes really crowded. Bars and clubs are easy to get into if you are under 21 and live in New York, but the police started cracking down.

On-campus parties? Never heard of...
On-campus parties? Never heard of them. The bars that college students can actually get into are frequently crowded and overpriced. At more popular bars (like the Post) bar-goers are rude, stupid, and very immature. Some of the nicer college bars would probably be the smaller ones, like Cagney’s; the nicer adult bars (you have to be 21 to get into them) are exorbitantly priced, and the crowd is typically too old to actually mingle properly. Sneaky Petes is the only dance club I’ve been to, and I enjoyed myself immensely there. The one rule that defines all clubs and bars in Albany—if it’s cheap, it’s small and crowded; if it’s nice, it’s expensive and crowded. |

Parties are okay, if you like the frat and sorority crowd. Bars to hit up if you are 21 are Mad River, Jillian’s, Bayou Café, Pearl, Lark Tavern—there are a ton more. |

Facts
Organization Parties
Many of the fraternities and sororities will rent out a bar for the night and throw mixers to raise money for their specific organization. This can be a good time, if you know someone who’s throwing the party. However, these parties tend to be full of cliques.
Club Listings
Nick’s Sneaky Petes hosts a plethora of different events—freestyle music, jungle themes, and live bands. It’s the club-goers sanctuary! If you enjoy techno, and dress to impress, head to Nick’s Sneaky Petes.

Pauly’s is great for happy hour and other nights of the week, when they have dollar pint specials, as well as shot specials. Pauly’s is located right next to Cagney’s, which makes it easy to bar hop between the two. This is another bar that students can easily get into with a fake or chalked ID. Students can easily get into this bar with a fake ID. (Fake IDs can land a student in jail or judicial trouble with the University. College Prowler does not condone the use of fake IDs. The Lark Tavern is for the hippie in all of us. Its relaxed atmosphere and laid-back crowd is the reason why many students go here to just sit and chill. Lark Tavern 453 Madison Ave. (518) 463-9779
This bar also serves as a venue for local and up-and-coming bands. Valentine’s hosts shows all throughout the week and weekends. Students must be 21 or over to enter the bar, but only 18 to check out the shows. Valentine’s 17 New Scotland Ave. (518) 432-6572
