Some kids from New York City complain that you can’t find a good bagel or deli in Buffalo. That’s the only gripe you’ll hear from anyone who has experienced the local food. Buffalo is not one of the 10 most overweight cities in America by accident. Fine dining and cheap eats are both top-notch. There are dozens of classy restaurants, including adventurous new openings every year; though, except for the annual parents’ visit, cheap eating is the rule for most local students. Rumor has it that there are more pizzerias per capita in Buffalo than anywhere else. In keeping with the city’s Midwestern ethos, Buffalo pizza is made Chicago-style, with a thick, doughy crust. Sal’s and Zetti’s in the Heights cater to the New York-style pizza crowd, but thin-crust pies are hard to find in most parts of the city. Though chicken wings were invented at the Anchor Bar near downtown, many students say they have been perfected at Duff’s in Amherst. You know a place is serious when they tell you how hot the wings are by printing the Scoville units of each sauce in the menu. Beef on weck sandwiches, made with roast beef and gravy on a salted kümmelweck roll, are as common as cheeseburgers in Buffalo. And students rave about Mighty Taco, a local Mexican chain that serves dirt-cheap tacos and burritos. Several places in the Heights offer a $0.99 or $1.99 breakfast, including Amy’s Place, where the Lebanese breakfasts often earn honors for best breakfast in town. Coffee shops are not as plentiful as they are in bigger cities. But Buffalo has some good ones, such as Coffee Bean in the Heights, which serves savory Creole food and a popular New Orleans Sunday brunch. Amherst’s wide suburban boulevards are peppered with your average chains like Fuddruckers and Outback Steakhouse and high-quality Indian, Thai, Vietnamese, and Japanese restaurants. For some reason, though, there are relatively few good Chinese places. Buffalo could also use a few more 24-hour dining options and a couple of genuinely good delicatessens close to campus.

Food is the best part of Buffalo....
Food is the best part of Buffalo. The best food is probably by the bars. Sal’s Pizza has a New York City flavor, while Jim’s SteakOut is a combination of Subway and McDonald's on steroids. So many places are open all hours of the night for late-night munchies, with decent prices, since it’s fairly inexpensive to open anything in Buffalo. |

From right off campus to downtown, there are classy Italian restaurants, Asian restaurants, and hamburger places. Two of my favorites are Amy’s Place on Main Street and Gabriel’s Gate on Allen Street. |

Buffalo restaurants are very, very good. If the Buffalo population knows anything, it’s good eating. |

Buffalo has great food selection...
Buffalo has great food selection at all times of the day and for all price ranges. Duff’s, right near the campus, has the greatest chicken wings ever (why do you think they call them Buffalo wings?). Mighty Taco is one of my favorites for a cheap, quick meal. From Gabriel’s Gate and Fat Bob’s Smokehouse in Allentown, to Pano’s (open late) on Elmwood near Buff State, to Joe Mata’s on Transit Road, the choices of places to eat is endless. Along Niagara Falls Boulevard, about two miles from campus, there are dozens of chain restaurants, if that’s your thing, but personally, I prefer the locally-owned places. |

There are many chain restaurants...
There are many chain restaurants just a mile or two off North Campus. There are also many great places to eat in the city. If you’re looking to take a girl out on a first date, try Ambrosia. |

Did You Know?According to legend, chicken wings were invented at Buffalo’s renowned Anchor Bar, five miles from campus. Buffalo wings are bigger, hotter, crispier on the outside, and juicier on the inside than at any place in the world. In Buffalo, waitresses won’t blink if you ask for vinegar with your fries—it’s a Canadian tradition. Buffalo plays host to the largest two-day food festival in the United States during the summer. The Taste of Buffalo invites local restaurants and wineries to participate in this delicious event that pays tribute a variety of cuisines including Indian, Chinese, Polish, Italian, Caribbean, Irish, and countless others.
