Best Ways to Get Around Town

  • Bike - in the warm months
  • Drive
  • Take campus bus to Metro Bus or Metro Rail

How to Get to the Airport

  • A cab ride to the airport costs about $20.
  • The airport is close enough that your best bet is to ask a friend to drop you off. But if you don't mind a long bus ride, the NFTA's 30-Kenmore bus runs to the airport about every 90 minutes. It leaves from the lower bus loop at University Station on South Campus (check www.nfta.com for schedules). Airport Taxi Service/ITA Shuttle, (800) 551-9369, also takes students to the airport.

College Prowler Take

Students who needed public transit between campuses used to be at the mercy of the Blue Birds, clattering blue buses held together with duct tape and chalked with graffitied statements like, “Out of Vietnam Now,” or “Ronald Reagan: Four More Years!” However, in the past few years, the old Birds have been replaced by a shiny fleet of white buses. UB has also purchased a small army of shuttle vans that travel on different color-coded routes (Red, Orange, Green, Blue) within the campuses. Buffalo’s light-rail line terminates at University Station on South Campus. While the little subway is somewhat of an urban joke in Buffalo, it’s clean and well-used (if not by students). But UB has finally accepted that a long-rumored light-rail link to North Campus will probably never be built.

Everyone is happy with the inter-campus bus service during the day when buses run about every five minutes. Night and weekend service is less frequent. Buses are usually separated by 20–30-minute intervals. On weekend nights, the inter-campus bus becomes the fabled “drunk bus,” which stops running just after 2 a.m. More and more students are using the shuttle vans to get from their apartment complexes or parking spots to the Spine. The subway is actually a popular way to get downtown for an event at Shea’s (the major performance theater) or HSBC Arena (home of the Sabres and big concerts). Of course, the most popular way of getting around Buffalo is by car. There’s a lot of parking everywhere, and you can get anywhere in the city (including the airport) in 15 to 20 minutes.

The South Campus bus, although it...

The South Campus bus, although it gets crowded, is a really good method for getting down to the bars on Main Street so you don’t have to worry about getting a designated driver or calling a cab. Another really convenient method of transportation is the subway, which runs directly from South Campus to downtown. Driving and parking downtown can be confusing anyway, so taking the subway is always a good method. The only problem is that it stops running really early (around midnight or 1 a.m.), which can be constricting.

Between the bus systems, public transportation is pretty easy to find, and they also connect to the subway.

If there is one thing at the top...

If there is one thing at the top of a list of UB’s good qualities, it is the transportation system around campus. There are a ton of buses that go back and forth between the two campuses. Once on either campus, the system is very efficient—shuttles have frequent stops all around the campus. My freshman year I was on crutches, and the transportation system was great at getting me around the campus.

Shuttles can bring you around to the whole campus. Getting to other places off campus is a little difficult if you don’t have a car. If you want an off-campus job, you basically need a car, unless you start dating the fat chick down the hall that does have a car.

It depends on the time of day. During the day, the busing on each campus and between campuses is great. But, though the buses run in the evening and nighttime hours, don’t count on being able to easily catch one.
