Needs to Be Smoother – Getting finical aid at Alabama is somewhat hard. If you want any support all your scholarships have to be turned in by December 1, which I think is a little out of hand. They don't really tell you when, you just have to figure out yourself when it is needed. But if you do get them turned in on time, your chances are pretty slim on getting them. I suggest making regular appointments with your finical aid and your councilor to get help and to know what is needed to do

Alabama is known for their football team. We have won 13 national championships, and I don't even know how many bowl games. Our athletes are viewed as gods pretty much. Thats just because they are so well known and everyone who doesn't know them wants to get to know them. Our social scene is mostly for the greeks, of course there are other parties that the non greeks have and im sure they have just as much fun. We have band parties that are held at the frat houses and pretty much everyone who is greek goes there. Our campus life is outstanding as well. Every student gets a weekly email saying whats going on on campus this week, and gives us full details about it. I love Alabama and we have an outstanding campus and social life.

Greek life at Alabama is huge! People come to Alabama to be involved in the greek life. There are all kinds of parties for the greeks that are here at Alabama. And as much as I hate to say it greek life here is everything. Greek housing is great also. If you are in a sorority you can live in your sororities house and vise versa for the frat houses. Greek students are viewed by non greeks as stuck up, and snobby. And the greeks view the non greeks as GDI's (God damn independent) that is what they like to be called as well. But overall Alabama greek life is amazing, and it gives everyone a chance to be in it if they would like.

Alabama gives a lot of scholarships, I got the merit based ones I was eligible for, but unless you are basically impoverished, you're not going to get any financial aid. It is completely base on your FAFSA results.

Tuscaloosa weather is nice. I love how it cools down after it rains. However, it is so hot and humid from May to October - it makes walking to class miserable.

Crimson Ride – The Crimson Ride buses are a good means of transportation on campus. However, getting from one side of campus to the other requires multiple bus line changes. 348-RIDE is a good escort service for the times when the buses aren't running.

Process Is Easy – The process is simple here at the University of Alabama. All I had to do was fill out a paper on the student MyBama website, and it signs me up for any scholarships that I am eligible for. I do wish that I had received more financial aid, though.

Guys & Girls:
They Are Nice. The girls and guys at the University of Alabama, for the most part, have manners. Though some come with no class or humility, they are few. The girls dress comfortably and do not try to "out-dress" people around campus. Everyone usually keeps to themselves and everyone gets along.

Food Tastes Okay – The dining halls usually have a nice variety of foods. They look good, but taste okay. I know that the University of Alabama has a very large budget. With a budget as huge as it is, I would think they would spend more on higher grades of food. But, overall, I enjoy my food and time at the dining halls.

The financial aid at UA is not the best. If you are coming from a low income family then it will really be a problem with the aid. Sometimes the financial aid workers do not listen to your problems and then you wouldn't know where to turn.

Why I Would Come Back to This School. University of Alabama is a great school. Even though it is expensive and your may have that feeling to give up and go home, there will always be something that causes you to stay. The academics at this school is awesome and you will graduate with a full knowledge about your major.

African Americans – It's very hard for African American that are not on scholarship to get scholarships from websites online when they attend the University of Alabama because many people assume that they could afford to go when they really can't.

Depending on your ACT score tuition can be fairly expensive.

Alcohol is definitely the most popular followed by marijuana. Depending on who you hang out with drugs are usually not something you hear too much about.

I am a student at the University of Alabama. The academics here are outstanding. There are many opportunities to get internships and co-op jobs. I myself just finished a semester of co-op and it has been great. Most facilities at Alabama are new with new ones being built. Most professors are very helpful and happy to share their knowledge. I don't have anything to complain about.

College is the most expensive thing my parents have ever paid for, other than a house. Between tuition, housing, and books, it is ridiculous. I don't qualify for financial aid because my parents make too much money in their jobs but it is still a struggle. I don't think it is fair that I don't qualify because of that.

Dining Outside the Tide – I love the off-campus dining options around Tuscaloosa. In Midtown Village, University Mall, and in downtown Tuscaloosa, there are restaurants varying in price ranges, menu selection, and atmosphere.

Health & Safety:
Safe in Crimson – For the most part, I do feel extremely safe on campus. I feel confident while I'm walking around by myself that nothing will happen to me. I don't typically go out at night by myself but if I had to, I would only be midly concerned. UAPD are constantly present and doing a great job.

Process for Summer – I wanted to study abroad in Greece the summer after my sophomore year. I worked with a lady who could not have helped me more. She was caring and I could tell she wanted me to get all the help possible. I met with her on several different occasions and I know if ti were not for her I probably would not have been able to study abroad and have such a wonderful learning experience.

Houses Are So Expensive – There are many houses that are in great location compared to campus, however, they can be extremely pricey. The landlords constantly go up in price and if you dont sign the lease before a certain date, you better believe the price will rise. There are a good variety of houses, old and new. But, the cost for houses that are old are too much considering the quality. THe nice and new houses are extremely expensive, simply because they can be.

Our Design Lab Does Not Meet the Demands for Our College – The computer lab that most all of my fellow design students as well as myself, use the same lab. Adams lab, in many ways is quite annoying. The computers are outdated and there are not enough to meet the demand of our particular college. This becomes a huge problem, especially around the end of each semester. Students have to wait in line to use a computer. This should never happen. Yes, we could use a different computer at a library, however it does not have adequate computer programs that our work requires. I would be so happy to see this change.

It's What You Make of It – Whatever you go looking for you can find. Rose Towers is an old dorm full of international students--as sharp contrast to Ridgecrest which is a brand new honors dorm. You can even find old-style dorms (the bathroom is down the hall) like Tutwiler, Burke, and Paty.
The security is a little relaxed--there may be someone at a front desk but you don't have to check in guests and some dorms don't require key-card entry during the day--this can be a little unnerving. There are always activities going on but they are poorly attended and I don't get the feeling that the dorms are central to social life at all.
Roommate contracts are just about the only regulations in the dorms so make sure that you fill one out with your roommates (MOST definitely put down guest policies) because the contract is law. The rules that are put in place by the university aren't always enforced.
All in all, dorms range from really nice (the honors dorms) to a little yucky (community-style dorms) but I enjoy living in the dorms. They are normally just a 5-15 minute walk to classes. The cost is a little steep for the newer dorms but if you can, the cost is worth the convenience.

Lots of Stores – If you don't have a car, all you may see of Tuscaloosa is McFarland Bvrd which is lined with stores and eating establishments. There is a line of bars and restaurants near campus called "The Strip" where a lot of students hang out. One thing's for certain, Tuscaloosa is used to college students and good old Southern hospitality abounds.
The university is only 45 minutes to an hour away from Birmingham, the largest city in Alabama, which is full of lots of attractions and things to do.
College Senior 2010-12-15T23:45:07Z
Longest Process Ever – The financial aid process for an out of state student is ridiculous. The main proportion of the scholarships go to instate students. The FASFA is your best bet but it still does not help much. It takes an extremely long time to fill out everything and for them to process it and it still does not give you much.
College Senior 2010-12-15T23:42:35Z
Frat Row and the Strip – The nightlife at the University of Alabama never dies. You can always find a party or something to do almost any night of the week. The best way to find nightlife is to go to Frat row because there is always something going on, especially Thursday-Saturday. They have bands parties almost every Friday night that are simply awesome. On the strip there are bars that are cool places to chill and rage.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
