Everyone is laid-back. You can walk across campus on a football Saturday with a 30 pack, and no one will even be suspicious. I have never had a run in with drugs on campus.

Most people on campus are middle-class, white, straight conservatives. You can easily run across some small-minded, sheltered jerks, but I think there are just as many open-minded people. UA is a big school, so you can find pretty much any type of person here.

They are as strict as they need to be. They will level with you on warnings, but once you're caught, you're caught. Basically, as long as you're not acting a fool, blatantly using something, or doing something wrong, they probably won't even notice.

It really depends on which group you associate yourself with because you will not see all diverse aspects of campus. It seems that most students here are white and come from middle- to upper-class families.

There is pretty much whatever you could want. The Strip is within walking distance and has tons of different restaurants. Wings and Dreamland are some favorites.

The dorms aren’t bad at all. I lived in Rose Towers, which is an apartment-style coed dorm. We had three people sharing a two bedroom, one bathroom, fully-furnished apartment. |

To the best of my knowledge, safety and security aren’t really a big problem on campus. Of course, you have to be smart about things—don’t do anything like wander around campus by yourself late at night (although plenty of people do and don’t generally have a problem, but it’s best to be careful). The campus police are great. There are emergency phones all over campus in case you ever have a problem. The police also offer an escort service that will take you to and from places on campus (such as the dorms, the computer labs, or the recreation center) late at night or any time that you don’t feel comfortable driving or walking somewhere alone. |

If you are a business student, Freedman Hall is a really nice place to live. Martha Parham/Mary Burke is a nice dorm as well, and it’s attached to the Commons Dining Hall. |

The only dorm I lived in was Tutwiler—it was an experience that I felt like I need to have as a freshman, but I wouldn’t want to do it again. |

Football is a religion. Tuscaloosa is known as a drinking town with a football problem. We take great pride in all of our varsity sports (basketball, baseball, softball, and gymnastics), and IM sports are popular year-round. I hear that a lot of people in campus organizations that I’m involved with participate in things like ultimate Frisbee, soccer, softball, flag football, and other IM sports. |

The bar scene in Tuscaloosa is second to none. The Yard, Cheap Shots, the Back Porch, Buffalo Phil’s, Harry’s, and the Houndstooth are all great bars, and Jupiter is a nice dance club/bar and grille. |

The Greek scene at Bama is very big. Their presence is sometimes a little too influential, but they throw great parties and most of them are cool to be around. I’m not a Greek. I went to rush, but it just wasn’t for me, so I decided against it. About 25 percent of the students here are Greek. |
