Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The UA is a huge sports school. Intramural sports are organized through the Student Recreation Center and are wildly popular. The sunny weather in Tucson allows for a wide variety of them, and the high attendance reflects the borderline sun-worshipping attitude of UA's student population. The University community is especially passionate when it comes to basketball; the hiring and recruiting has revived the program after a tumultuous end to the previous reign. Students cheer wildly at games, refusing to study during the Final Four, and they have rioted when the team makes it to the national championships. One student bystander lost his eye when police shot beanbags to contain one of the championship riots. But at least he was able to sue and get lots of money.

Football is also a huge event. It’s fun to cheer on the team—it’s a bonding experience and a community effort, for sure. Ticket sales for football seem to increase every season as the team improves, and ZonaZoo's rah-rah atmosphere remains one of the essential freshman experiences. The girls on the softball team have been national champions, and surprisingly, the hockey team is not half-bad. Sports rule the roost at Zona, and students wouldn't have it any other way.

Fun Atmosphere

Basketball and football are very successful programs at U of A. Basketball is especially very well known. Both sports have good and bad seasons but the games are always a blast and the community involvement and support are never lacking. We love our Wildcats!

Usually a Letdown

Always hype surrounding our athletic teams, but rarely live up to it. Great student atmosphere at games provides a bump in the grade.

Most Overlooked Teams

Swimming, soccer, baseball, and volleyball all seem to have a relatively small fan base. But these boys and girls really do kick butt at what they do, winning awards without coverage. They go under the radar and don’t seem to mind.

School Spirit

A red wave floods the stadiums, and that is where the ZonaZoo Wildcat fans are located during games. T-shirts are given to members of ZonaZoo, and fans wear them with pride during games. The bell at noon is the “Bear Down, Arizona” song, which, in a nutshell, shows how obsessed with sports students are at U of A.

Getting Tickets

For basketball tickets, it is the luck of the draw—literally. It is a lottery for students, and unless you have a huge bank account, getting a ticket can be near impossible for students (at least for season tickets). Compared to basketball, football and all other sports are a cakewalk; you can simply buy them at www.arizonawildcats.com. Visa, Mastercard, AmEx, cash, check, and e-check are all accepted.

Best Place to Take a Walk

Walking right down from Tucson Boulevard to Fourth Avenue is a popular route. Bikes, Rollerblades, and skateboards all fly by this lovely route. You get to see the Sam Hughes neighborhood, the campus, and University Boulevard, and you wind up on Fourth, where a $1 PBR at Che’s may be calling your name.
