Special Options

  • There are numerous quick-stop eateries around campus for students on the go: Cappuccino Cart Food Stops, Convenience Food Shops, Hot Dog Food Stops, and more than 350 vending machines on campus filled with sodas, chips, candy, and other snacks. You can order out and have it delivered, but it’s a cruel student indeed who would make a delivery driver first try to locate a building, and then try to find a place to park.

College Prowler Take

The UA has everything you need to gain the dreaded Freshman 15. On the flipside, however, the UA also has a nice recreation center where you can work it all off. Our multi-million dollar student union lacks one thing; most of its restaurants do not take debit cards (Papa John’s and Panda Express do). This means that students have to wait in line to draw cash out of the various ATMs along the walls. It’s ridiculous, really. But our Student Union Memorial has more places to eat than the food courts in most shopping malls. Be careful, though, because most students agree that it’s easy to deplete your funds as you sample the various culinary offerings, especially since the different aromas wafting about make you hungrier as you wait in line to withdraw your money—temptation, temptation.

The University also offers a meal plan in which money can be placed on a chip embedded in the students’ ID cards. Those living in dorms usually use this meal plan, and those who live off campus don’t. The two student unions have little convenience marts where they overcharge on everything except Wrigley’s chewing gum. There’s also a buffet and an IQ Juice. Everything is just a little expensive. You should be able to find whatever you want on any given day, though. Happy food hunting.

I am allergic to gluten, so this was really hard for me. I would eat at our many salad bars; Core and Cactus Grill have a nice selection. But after freshman year, you get really sick of the food and the smell of the food, so just get a job where you can afford to buy food at the store or go out to eat.

Arizona has a lot of options, but on your meal plan you still get sick of the food. I like this new place called Core where you build your own salads, also Oy Vey Café is delicious. Our dining halls aren't very typical; there are tables everywhere inside and out, and there is always something going on. The Student Union seems to have your generic foods like Burger King, Chick-Fil-A and Panda Express. If you wander around, you will find some of the hidden treasures of campus like Oy Vey.

Freshman year is the only year I have had a meal plan, and that is plenty. There is a hugely diverse selection of food, but how many times can you eat Panda Express or bagels for breakfast? There are good hidden treasures like Oy Vey Café (vegetarian and kosher), Reddington Café, and the Cellar if you are craving greasy food.

The food on campus is good. You can put money on your student ID card and use that at all food places on campus. It’s great for not having to have cash on you.

Did You Know?

When it was finished in 2003, the Student Union Memorial was the largest student union in the U.S. without a hotel attached. It was also designed to resemble the U.S.S. Arizona battleship that was destroyed at Pearl Harbor.
