Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The UA has everything you need to gain the dreaded Freshman 15. On the flipside, however, the UA also has a nice recreation center where you can work it all off. The Student Union Memorial Center (SUMC) has more places to eat than the food courts in most shopping malls; the only thing really missing is a full-on grocery store. Be careful, though: Most students agree that it’s easy to deplete your funds as you sample the various culinary offerings, especially since the different aromas wafting about make you hungrier as you wait in line to withdraw your money—temptation, temptation. The usual campus vendors are present here, along with a nice assortment of restaurants unique to the UA.

The University also offers a meal plan in which money can be placed on a chip embedded in the students’ ID cards. Those living in dorms usually use this meal plan, and those who live off campus don’t—these same dorm-dwellers usually exhaust the wide variety by the end of their first month. The SUMC has a little convenience mart that overcharges on everything except Wrigley’s chewing gum. There’s also a buffet, steakhouse, and smoothie shop. Despite the high prices, you should be able to find most anything you want on any given day, with the exception of high-quality organic food. Healthy options are difficult to find on campus, but otherwise, just about anyone will be happy with the choices here on a day-to-day basis. Happy food hunting.

UA Meal Plan

This school doesn't have a cafeteria so a lot of the eating options is fast food. There are some restaurants with more home cooked food but there are far fewer healthy options than fattening ones. Some of the most popular and healthier spots are core, cactus grill, and the cellar.

So Many Choices!

In the Campus Union, there are a variety of different places to eat. Popular choices range from Panda Express to Burger King, to Chik-fil-a and Papa Johns. Besides these popular fast food choices, there is also a Mexican place, an Italian restaurant, two delis and a cafeteria-like place that switches up the menu often. Although there are a total of ten places in the Union alone, the selection gets a little old after freshman year. Regardless, many students continue visit the Campus Union a few times per week, as it is a convenient location and there are many places to choose from and will satisfy a craving.

Facts

24-Hour Dining None, but the Cellar stays open until 2 a.m.
Special Options There are numerous quick-stop eateries around campus for students on the go: cappuccino cart food stops, convenience food shops, hot dog food stops, and more than 350 vending machines on campus filled with sodas, chips, candy, and other snacks. You can order out and have it delivered, but it’s a cruel student indeed who would make a delivery driver first try to locate a building, and then try to find a place to park.
Did You Know? When it was finished in 2003, the Student Union Memorial Center (SUMC) was the largest student union in the U.S. without a hotel attached. It was also designed to resemble the U.S.S. Arizona battleship that was destroyed at Pearl Harbor.
