College Prowler Take

The UA has a lot of nice computers, but most students here will tell you to bring a personal computer if you can. If you can’t, then you’ll just have to learn how to survive in the computer jungle. Not a problem. There are a lot of computer labs around campus. Most students, however, just get into the habit of visiting the same computer lab. These students would be better off if they learned how to strategically plan. For instance, one has to take into consideration the time of day—if it’s noon, well that’s just bad for you. All you can do is wait for a computer, or rip all of your hair out in frustration (either one). Or, you could go into the Career Services lab. Hardly anyone goes there, way up on the fourth floor of the Student Union Memorial! Learn these secrets, and your computer experiences will be more pleasant, especially if you can’t bring your own. If you can bring one, you will enjoy the fast Internet service that’s offered in the residence halls.

Students often complain about other students playing computer games while they’re waiting to get on a computer so they can finish writing their essay that’s due within the hour. This will happen. My only suggestion here would be to carry around dollar bills to bribe a student out of a chat room. Appeal to their sense of mercy by telling them that they can finish their silly game some other time, being that your entire future hangs in the balance.

I bring my laptop to campus everyday. U of A has a huge public Wi-Fi network that stretches to cover all of the buildings on campus. The ILC (Integrated Learning Center) has so many computers, but for some reason they are always full. So if you need to print a project, get there early in anticipation of waiting for one to open up.

The computer labs in the ILC and Main Library are packed during finals and midterms, so bringing your own computer is a must. Sometimes either really early in the morning or before 2 p.m. you are able to find a computer and camp out there and get what you need to do done. I usually bring my own computer to class and do my homework at an off-campus coffee shop or restaurant. Everyone is connected to Wi-Fi these days.

You don’t have to have one. You could get by without one, but if you can afford it, I would say to get one! They are pretty important, considering that a lot of classes have the lecture notes or quizzes online. The school is very high-tech, and it would be nice if you could bring a computer.

There’s a place called the Integrated Learning Center (ILC), which is a huge computer lab. It’s underground and nice to have; I used it all the time as a place to study. If I had a paper to do and couldn’t get it done in the dorms, then I would just go there and I could always get a computer!

There’s fast Internet in the dorms. If you have your own, bring it. You don’t need it, though. There are lots of labs, most with free printing.

Did You Know?

The Multimedia Zone is a staffed, high-tech computer lab where students can engage in animation or make and edit independent movies.

Many of the departments have their own labs. Sometimes, there are programs within departments or buildings that offer labs and even free printing for up to 10 pages. Examples: There is a lab in the Shantz Building, but sometimes you can’t get in, because it’s also used as a classroom. The Chicano/Hispano Affairs, The Martin Luther King Building, and the Native American Student Affairs all have their own labs. And if you walk into Old Main from the east-side doors and turn immediately left, you’ll find another conveniently-placed computer lab. Just ask around and keep your eyes peeled.
