Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The UA is like most other universities in terms of its white population compared to its minority groups. What can you do? Diversity is something society must continue to deal with and address in years to come. Many minorities think that there are a lot of white people on campus, and many white people think that the campus is pretty diverse. Overall, the UA puts plenty on the table, diversity-wise, at least for its current place in time and history. It has a large Hispanic population, which may be one of Arizona’s more unique diversity claims as a Southwestern state. That isn't to say it's impossible to find others like you; one student claims it's easy to "always come across a wide variety of people from all over, speaking different languages."

Long story short, anyone not from your typical cookie-cutter suburban American family still has a healthy chance to express him or herself and rise up as an educated individual at the UA. Minority fraternities and sororities make their presence known on campus and, over the last several years, have stayed steady in regards to the number of members they retain. There are Hispanic, African American, Native American, and Asian American centers where a student can go hang out with people who may have a little more in common with themselves than, say, their roommates or professors. The UA works hard to encourage its minority population, and it's one of the better things about the University.

Different Than High School

My high school was not that diverse seeing that it was considered a "ghetto" school so we had many Mexicans and Blacks even Whites, and very little Asians. Coming to college I felt a little out of place because I felt like I was going to a "White" school. Everyone almost looked the same, but I must say there were a lot more Asians then my high school. It was a totally different change from "Mexicans and Blacks" to "Whites and Asians".

Facts

Gay Pride

The University of Arizona has gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender groups promoting awareness and acceptance to those who are still in a haze about these groups. There are events on the mall endorsing and supporting the GLBT students at the UA. There are plenty of drag shows in La Paz each year to open your eyes to the transgender folks here in Tucson.

Political Activity

Striding throughout campus, you will see many political groups tabling on the mall and holding panel discussions and debates throughout the day. If sitting and holding polite conversation over tea isn't your gig, perhaps you'll enjoy the giant abortion-related display that hits the UA's mall every year. There are the Young Democrats and Republicans, along with all the smaller political parties in between. Getting involved in one of these clubs guarantees a close-knit group of friends with similar interests. Check out Arizona Model United Nations if you are an unbiased, international affairs-loving person.

Economic Status

BMWs and Mercedes are not unusual throughout campus and its surroundings. There are plenty of wealthy kids who come here from New York, New Jersey, California, and Illinois with their parents' credit cards in their pockets. But on the other hand, there are plenty of the typical “poor college students” working full time at restaurants, bars, and shops attending to these rich kids daily. You by no means have to be rich to go here—Tucson is one of the cheapest places to live in the United States, allowing for a wide latitude of socio-economic statuses to interact on one campus.

Most Common Religions

Christian and Catholics parade on campus in their “WWJD” shirts and bracelets. The Hillel for Jewish students is full come lunch time at Oy Vey Café, and synagogues are filled with the Jewish students from UA. Muslims are prominent in promoting global peace, and atheists congregate throughout hallways and buildings. Any religion or non-religion that suits your fancy can be found at UA, and each has several places of worship near campus.

Minority Clubs on Campus

The University of Arizona is primarily a white campus. But with diversity growing exponentially, the Hispanic population is growing along with African Americans, Asians, and foreign students by the year. There are plenty of clubs, such as the Sigma Lambda Beta fraternity, the East Asian Club, Russian Club, Spanish Club, and Francophone and Lusophone clubs (and for many other languages and cultures found under the Tucson sun). Arguably, one of the greatest aspects of the UA club scene is that if a particular group doesn't exist, ASUA (Associated Students of the University of Arizona) makes it easy for you to create your own.
