College Prowler Take

The UA is like most other universities in terms of its white population compared to its minority groups. What can you do? Diversity is something society must continue to deal with and address in years to come. Many minorities think that there are a lot of white people on campus, and many white people think that the campus is pretty diverse. Overall, the UA is okay, diversity wise, at least for its current place in time and history. It has a large Hispanic count, which may be one of Arizona’s more unique diversity claims as a southwestern state. Hopefully more students of color will be gaining a university education in the upcoming years.

People of color have a healthy chance to express themselves and rise up as educated individuals at the UA. Minority fraternities and sororities are making their presence known on campus. There are Hispanic, African American, Native American, and Asian American centers where a student can go hang out with people who may have a little more in common with themselves than, say, their roommates or professors. The UA works hard to encourage its minority population.

Our campus, given the state that...

Our campus, given the state that we live in, is pretty darn diverse. There is such a range of kids of all orientations and protests for everything to anti-abortion to GLBT rights. We've got every religion, every race, every political and sexual orientation you could imagine. That's one thing I love about Arizona.

The campus is so diverse, maybe...

The campus is so diverse, maybe not as much as others, but we do have people from everywhere all mushed into one little university. There are so many different belief systems and political and sexual ideologies, but everyone just gets along (unless there is some crazy protest on campus). You can't really tell who believes in what, so we just become friends, and it works here in Tucson.

Tucson seems on par with the rest of my life when it comes to diversity. Having all major religions, political dogmas, and social classes represented on campus provides an excellent variety when it comes to meeting new people.

U of A has a ton of diversity for Arizona. I mean, we have a huge influx of foreign exchange students because our programs are so diverse. We are also a campus that will accommodate any religion, any ideology, and any political or sexual orientation. The nice thing is that we can all interact in a classroom, and the differences aren't even a factor.

Not Much Variety, but Acceptance

B+

There are not many minorities on campus, but they have good representation. I think that everyone is accepted; we don't have problems with prejudice or hate crimes.

Facts

Economic Status

BMWs and Mercedes are not unusual to see driving throughout campus and its surroundings. There are plenty of wealthy kids who come here from New York, New Jersey, California, and Illinois with their parents' credit cards in their pockets. But on the other hand, there are plenty of the typical “poor college students” working full-time at restaurants, bars, and shops attending to these rich kids daily. You by no means have to be rich to go here---Tucson is one of the cheapest places to live in the United States, allowing for a wide latitude of socio-economic statuses to interact on one campus.

Gay Pride

The University of Arizona has gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender groups promoting awareness and acceptance to those who are still in a haze about these groups. There are events on the mall endorsing and supporting the GLBT students at the U of A. There are plenty of drag shows in La Paz each year to open your eyes to the transgender folks here in Tucson.

Minority Clubs on Campus

As of 2005, the University of Arizona is still primarily a white campus. But with diversity growing exponentially, the Hispanic population here is growing along with African Americans, Asians, and foreign students by the year. There are plenty of clubs, such as the Sigma Lambda Beta fraternity, the East Asian Club, Russian Club, Spanish Club, and the list goes on depending on what country you are from and what language you speak.

Most Common Religions

Christian and Catholics parade on campus in their “WWJD” shirts and bracelets. The Hillel for Jewish students is full come lunch time at Oy Vey Café, and synagogues are filled with the Jewish students from UA. Muslims are prominent in promoting global peace, and atheists congregate throughout hallways and buildings. Any religion or non-religion that suites your fancy can be found here at UA.

Political Activity

Striding throughout campus you will see many, many political groups tabling on the mall and holding panel discussions and debates throughout the day. There are the Young Democrats and Republicans, along with all the smaller political parties in between. Getting involved in one of these clubs guarantees a close-knit group of friends with similar interests.
