Inside Scoop

Quick Stats

School Slang
  • Bro: A typical California fraternity dude
  • CBS building: The Koffler Building
  • Date Dash/Mixer: A social event, usually a dance, held by Greek life chapters
  • Fixies: The ever-popular trend of fixed-gear bicycles in Tucson. Watch out, drivers—these kids are reckless.
  • Fuku: No, no one is insulting you—it means, “Hey, let’s go get some sushi and sake at Fuku Sushi.” Pronounced “foo-koo.”
  • Horchata: A sweet-rice, milky drink. It’s served in many gas stations and Mexican restaurants.
  • The mall: The grassy lawn in front stretching from Old Main to the east end of the campus
  • Mijo/a: Any child or a younger person being addressed by an older person; this term is used with affection. Some Hispanic professors might call you this. It’s a term used in concern and with sincerity.
  • OSCR ("Oscar"): OSCR is a group of computer geniuses that will help you with anything techie-based.
  • The Rec: Student Recreation Center, aka the gym
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Being an "undeclared" freshman isn't that bad. The first two years of school are getting your GenEds out of the way anyway—and make sure to do this because it's one of the biggest reasons people don't graduate on time.
  • Construction is a huge inconvenience.
  • Drink lots of water—you will sweat, get delirious, and end up in the hospital from heat exhaustion.
  • Get out of your comfort bubble, especially in your first two years when you are in your largest and most diverse classes. Being a UA student can be mentally taxing, and it's hard enough without having many friends. Try not to be an introvert.
  • It gets HOT.
  • It's faster to ride a bike to get where you need to go.
  • It's important to stay in shape here because such hot weather means showing more skin. Nearly all of the student body is in at least decent shape.
  • Student Union food is expensive, as is living on campus.
  • There are, in fact, alternatives to buying books from the UA Bookstore in the Student Union Memorial Center. Explore them.
  • There is no "pool on the roof" of any building on campus.
Tips to Succeed
  • Be open to all kinds of people; this is a huge campus, and finding your own niche can be as easy as you make it.
  • Do all of your homework.
  • Don't party too hard. A disgusting number of first- and second-year students drop out each year because they can't stop drinking.
  • Establish a good social circle in your first two years.
  • Get involved! Clubs, sports, working out—it is what you make of it.
  • Go to class no matter what.
  • Go to office hours for your classes; teachers will love you.
  • If you have a midterm or final, don't drink the night before.
  • Keep track of all documentation—for anything. The UA administration is notorious for "losing" things.
  • Manage your time well. You probably won’t wake up for that 8 a.m. class every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
  • Take notes because you never know what will pop up on the final or midterm exam.
  • Wear sunscreen; skin cancer kills.

Its a Great Life

Its always warm and provides a great learning experience with a lot of life lessons along the way. Places to eat are amazing and the grass mall is a great study place to catch up on some vitamin D.
