College Prowler Take

If you live within five miles of campus, it’s better to buy a cheap bicycle and happily pedal to school everyday than to daily dish out change for meters or wait at a bus stop where you’re a sitting duck, just asking for something bad (like a mugging or random assassination) to happen to you. Besides, it’s good exercise to bike around.

Get a bike—really. Park far away and bike into campus. Or buy a Geo Metro if you have to drive (they’re good on gas and will fit atop most standard issue fire hydrants). The city bus is okay, but do you really want to stress out about the bus being on time, or about showing up and wondering if you just barely missed it? Plus, many students aren’t exactly enamored with some of the people who ride the buses. The UA shuttle isn’t bad, but oftentimes it’s not worth the 15-minute wait. UA shuttle service is pretty reliable, though, and it can usually drop you off close to your next class. Again, riding a sturdy bike cancels out the time spent waiting for the shuttle. You might see a friend while riding and catch up on gossip. Maybe you’ll crash into a gorgeous guy or girl and fall in love. So many good things can happen on a bicycle. Skateboards are another popular mode of transportation at the UA. Those fold-up scooters are now considered to be stupid and you will be, too, if you ride one. All the more reason to get a bike!

Tucson's public transportation, or...

Tucson's public transportation, or lack there of, is probably one of the worst. I moved here for school from the East Coast, and seeing how poorly planned the city and the transportation routes are makes me miss that about the East Coast. But once you get the hang of Safe Ride and biking everywhere, you can get around yourself.

The Suntran is our public transportation for the city of Tucson, but I would not trust it. I rode it once, and it was 15 minutes late picking me up and a half an hour late dropping me off. But, on campus there is the Catran which seems a bit more reliable. The cabs off campus are punctual, and Safe Ride is there for you if you call.

No one takes the bus unless they have to. U of A has a shuttle called ‘CatTran’ that goes all around campus.

Buses I wouldn’t know because I never took any. There is a ‘CatTran’ that takes you all over campus! It’s nice when it’s really hot outside, or if you just don’t want to walk to your class or to your destination.
