Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

If you live within five miles of campus, it’s better to buy a cheap bicycle and happily pedal to school every day than give all of your change to the meters. Besides, it’s good exercise to bike around. The city bus system in Tucson is serviceable, but not great. It will get you around and is fairly reliable, but that's about the most you can say about it. Many students aren’t exactly enamored with some of the people who ride the buses because it's not uncommon to run into creepy homeless people or those who have just escaped from prison on the Sun Tran. If that's OK by you, then great! If not, you might consider another mode of transport.

Get a bike—really. Park far away and bike into campus. The UA shuttle isn’t bad, but oftentimes it’s not worth the 15-minute wait. UA shuttle service is pretty reliable, though, and it can usually drop you off close to your next class. Again, riding a sturdy bike cancels out the time spent waiting for the shuttle. You might see a friend while riding and catch up on gossip. Maybe you’ll crash into a gorgeous guy or girl and fall in love. So many good things can happen on a bicycle (except pedestrian collisions). Skateboards are another popular mode of transportation at UA. Those fold-up scooters are considered to be stupid and you will be, too, if you ride one. All the more reason to get a bike!

Stuck.

While there are a wide variety of ways to get around campus at University of Arizona (walk, bike, Cat Tran, city bus, or car) there are so many people packed into one place it becomes hectic. There is a pretty useful pickup system at the school called Safe Ride that runs every night besides Saturday and will take you anywhere in a 1 mile radius for free. Bikes rule the campus. They're literally everywhere. Driving is hard because people seem to have forgotten what a cross walk is. To make matters worse the city is tearing up all of the streets to install a "Modern Day Streetcar". Tucson streets are in bad enough condition as it is, they don't need more congestion.

Hope You Like Walking

Transportation is an issue at UofA. Most students carpool or bring there cars to school but they have to pay the parking fee which costs $300 or so and traffic and the infrastructure is painfully hard to navigate. Others use the shuttle provided by their apartment, but you have to live off campus. For people on campus, you can catch the bus, bum a ride, bike/skateboard, or walk in the heat.
