Pomfret environment depends on what wing you are on. I was in Bwing, and it was great. People are friendly and diverse. The great room is a great place to hang out and do homework. There is always some kind of event going on which is cool. The cafeteria is decent. It gets the job done, but can be repetitive. One negative is the walk up hill--killer. No worries, there are always buses running as long as its from 7am-6pm.

Living on campus your freshman year is definitely the way to go. The campus is relatively small compared to other major universities, so each dorm is within an easy walking distance to classes or the dining areas. Be wary of the resident assistants, though; some of them can be extremely cool, and you'll wonder who put them in charge, but other RAs will seem like their sole purpose in life is to write up students. Each dorm has its own social scene and role on campus. Humphreys, for example, has a Mardi Gras party every year. Also, Pomfret throws get-togethers throughout the year. These parties are usually non-alcoholic, so if getting drunk and getting wild and crazy isn't your scene, these socials might be just right.
The nicest dorms for freshmen are definitely the Maple Hill dorms. They're relatively new, and they have all of the amenities a college freshman could ask for. Having a private bathroom in the suite is one of the biggest perks. It is more expensive and further away from the center of campus than the other dorms, but living in Maple Hill is well worth it. Two of the most commonly lived-in dorms for freshmen are Humphreys and Yocum halls. They are located smack-dab in the center of campus, and they're next door to Brough Commons and across the street from the business college and Kimpel Hall. Humphreys, however, lacks an important aspect of comfort that Yocum has: air conditioning. But luckily the mild Fayetteville weather only makes this dorm uncomfortable for a couple of months.
