Berkeley students are happy with their computing options, though wait lines and stressed students are common in most facilities. An overwhelming number of students suggest bringing a computer to school, preferably a laptop, if you want to stay in convenient contact with your family, friends, and instructors, as well as work on papers and reports at your own leisure. Berkeley has tried to make private and public computing painless by offering high-speed Internet throughout the dorms, labs, and library, and through wireless hubs all over campus. Plus, a lot of local cafes have free wireless.

Whether or not you own a personal computer, it is important to have daily computer access because many professors send out announcements via e-mail. The UC library has an extensive online database and several programs that let you store research on your computer. Furthermore, Berkeley recently began posting lectures online, and many are available on iTunes. As the campus becomes more technologically advanced, having a personal computer will become increasingly beneficial.
