Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Students at Berkeley are more than satisfied with their off-campus food selection. Ranging from cheap ($3 for a bratwurst with the works at Top Dog) to not so cheap ($75 for a prix-fix meal at Chez Panisse), the food in the Berkeley area almost always lives up to the hype. With the on-campus food often less than palatable, the endless variety of off-campus dining choices is not only nice, but, to some degree, necessary. Students agree that there is a cornucopia of places to sit, eat, drink, and socialize, no matter how much money is in your wallet or what you’re in the mood for.

If you live in the dorms and you don’t have a car, you’ll most likely be sticking to the around-the-corner favorites—Top Dog, La Burrita, Durant Avenue’s “ghetto food court,” Gypsy’s Trattoria Italiano, and Blondie’s. But if you are feeling a little sick of the grease and the same crowd every night, then be happy to know that there is still an entire world of cheap, good food just a few more blocks away (sometimes a little more). So skip the dining commons once in a while and head out somewhere a little more risky, maybe somewhere farther than you’re used to walking, like College Avenue, University Avenue, or Solano Avenue. You’ll build up an appetite that’ll definitely be satisfied.

Berkeley Restaurants

There are so many good ones to choose from! Many are on South side, but there are also a ton on Shattuck and if you go farther down Shattuck you get to the Gourmet Ghetto. Mmmm.

Ethnic Food!

Coming from a really small and secluded town, coming to Berkeley was like, a whole new eating experience. Tons and tons of variety. Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Mexican, Pho Bars, PIZZA, Burger Joints, and a ton of adorable cafes. Delicious.
