College Prowler Take
Now that Davis is a Division I school—it was officially certified in 2007 after a four-year process—varsity sports get plenty of attention. Football games draw big crowds, and the Aggie Pack (possibly the largest student-run organization in America) encourages the masses by handing out free shirts, water bottles, and UCD gear. Some students have voiced concern over the fee increases because of the move to DI, but others argue that with the extra money generated by athletics, the campus will be able to make improvements that benefit all students. While varsity sports do enjoy popularity, the club sports really have the limelight. IM sports are pretty big here, too, and anyone can participate. There are the traditional sports like soccer, basketball, and volleyball, but Davis also has some less conventional teams: inner tube water polo, Hapkido, and ballroom dancing. There is a wide range of experience, from athletes who have played since they were five to people just looking for a way to stay in shape. It’s a great way to try new sports, and it also makes it easy to stay involved. Everyone’s really friendly, and meeting people is really easy when you’re both slamming heads while diving for the same volleyball.

Varsity sports at Davis are lame—we have no good teams to watch. As for the IM sports, I think that the everyone should try them because they are very fun.

IMs are the best. They’re a great way to get involved and meet new people. But to be honest, I went to one football game all year, and that was it. It doesn’t seem like many people go. |

Davis is pretty good at sports, and everyone especially likes to watch football—Aggies never sit down during the game. I really like the soccer team too—they are really good. Most of the players from different teams live in Segundo because it is close to everything.

Sports are pretty big on campus. Our football, baseball, and basketball teams are really good and draw lots of people to their games. There are IM sports of all kinds, and you will probably find what you like. Most are coed. |
