Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Now that Davis is a Division I school—it was officially certified in 2007 after a four-year process—varsity sports get plenty of attention. Football games draw big crowds, and the Aggie Pack (possibly the largest student-run organization in America) encourages the masses by handing out free shirts, water bottles, and UCD gear. Some students have voiced concern over the fee increases because of the move to DI, but others argue that with the extra money generated by athletics, the campus will be able to make improvements that benefit all students.

While varsity sports do enjoy popularity, the club sports really have the limelight. IM sports are pretty big here, too, and anyone can participate. There are the traditional sports like soccer, basketball, and volleyball, but Davis also has some less conventional teams: inner tube water polo, Hapkido, and ballroom dancing. There is a wide range of experience, from athletes who have played since they were five to people just looking for a way to stay in shape. It’s a great way to try new sports, and it also makes it easy to stay involved. Everyone’s really friendly, and meeting people is really easy when you’re both slamming heads while diving for the same volleyball.

Something for Everyone

The athletics at UC Davis are open to everyone who is looking to get involved. While our football team may not take the cake compared to other schools, we definitely have other sports that shine (i.e. Tennis, Soccer, Swimming). The school spirit is great, students come decked out in jerseys, body paint, reppin' the school colors---everyone has a good time. Those that are looking for ways to get out of the house and get their blood flowing need only to visit our gym, the ARC, to find a club to get involved in. We have a wide range of activities offered, from rugby to volleyball, and even inner tube water polo. The large number of teams allows for people of all skill levels to join.

UC Davis Athletics

Although athletics is not as integral to our student life here at UCD compared to other schools, our athletics department is quite formidable. Of those who participate in intramurals and athletics, all our very dedicated and hardworking. Because not many people attend games in general, whenever a team reaches some amount of success, a lot of people will turn out. Also, because a lot of freebies are given out at games, the school spirit is pretty high as well. Our ARC is a great facility, and students use it to their greatest extent, as evidence by the fact that there are always people there. They also offer group exercise courses, like Zumba and yoga, that are very popular as well.

School Spirit

Davis has such inspiring school spirit! Besides packing the stadium for football games, hanging out on Picnic Day, and plastering the UC Davis logo over much of their clothing, Davis students show school pride in the support they show for each other. Plays on campus are often sold out, wild and screaming fans attend nearly every sporting event, and student clubs thrive off of the initiative of the student body. There is an abundance of school spirit. Students cheer for just about anything, unless of course, they decide to protest it. Incidentally, Davis students are known for their spirited picket lines, boycotts, and sit-ins. Campus bulletin boards are feathered with flyers advertising different protests—everything from the increased student fees, to Proctor and Gamble’s animal testing, to the mobilization of troops. Generally, UCD students are very informed about issues they feel strongly about, and they don’t hesitate to share their views. Students are loud and proud, and though there are occasional discrepancies between students, all perspectives are usually heard and respected.
