College Prowler Take

The majority of students are satisfied with the food on campus, but as usual, being away from home-cooked meals can leave some students desiring mom’s cooking. The Silo is popular, with basics such as Taco Bell, Carl’s Jr., and Pizza Hut, plus Stock Pot soups, Sub City sandwiches, Crepeville, and Café Fresca salads, sushi, parfaits, wraps, and sandwiches. You will also find organic frozen food meals, which are also available at the Silo. Students rave about the convenience of Aggie Cash—prepaid dollars on student accounts that allows them to swipe meals at the Silo and other restaurants downtown.

The dorm food at Davis is not your typical “dorm” food—it is definitely above par when compared to other typical cafeteria-style dormitory dining commons elsewhere. There's a vast variety of tasty meals. The dining commons (DC) are convenient and offer a plethora of options, especially when compared to the other UC campuses. For the unadventurous DC diner, cereal, salad, and the sandwich bar may prove to be dietary staples. The dining commons have plenty of vegetarian and vegan selections, and some theme nights, such as Indian, Caribbean, and Korean, that students seem to enjoy. Whatever the dining commons lack in their entrées, they make up with their desserts. With frozen yogurt and at least five desserts to choose from, Davis students always end their meals on a good note.

The food on campus is wonderful. The dining halls are great and have a variety of fresh fruits and veggies every day, a full salad and soup bar, and several entrées for each meal. The Silo has great crepes and sandwiches and is a great place to stop between classes. The Coffee House (CoHo) also has great food ranging from pastries to sandwiches to burritos and is right next to the quad.

Food on campus is pretty good. There’s the Silo, which has fast food places, as well as food like crepes and sandwiches. There’s the UC Davis Coffee House, where you can get burritos, bagels, and salads. I lived in the Tercero dorms last year, and I think they have the best DC food compared to the others.

Your first year here, you will...

Your first year here, you will most likely stay in the dorms to eat. Dorm food is nutritious, but I found myself eating chicken sandwiches, fries, and side salads for dinner all too often. Memorial Union has a student-run coffee house, which is also an option. Here you can find pizza, burritos, soups, salads, or entire meals.

On-campus food is decent. We have two places to go eat. The Coffee House (or CoHo) is actually the largest restaurant in northern California and is run by ASUCD. It’s like a very large cafeteria. There’s every kind of food you can think of. Across campus from that, there’s the Silo, which has Taco Bell, Carl’s Jr., Subway, a crepe place (crepes are huge in Davis), and some other fast food places.

The food on campus is not bad at all. If you are going to be a freshman, you will be living in the dorms, and the DCs are pretty good. I must say that off-campus food is a lot better, but it all depends on your style. We have the typical fast food joints that none of us can stay away from, plus Jamba Juice and Pluto’s, a great salad place. They are located in Downtown Davis.
