College Prowler Take
Davis requires that incoming students bring their own computers, and financial aid is available to help them. The professors communicate via the Internet, and there are lots of course-related e-mails, Web sites, and notes that get distributed daily. Some courses even have online quizzes and midterms, downloadable lecture notes, and practice exams. Most see this as convenient and a way to stay abreast of modern technology. However, it is a change from the classical textbook and lecture way of learning that most experience in high school. College not only opens the doors of the social and academic world, it encourages and enhances the application of technology. With the stellar network the University offers, computers definitely play a role in education. While students are required to have their own computers, there are also computer labs on campus, and students mainly use them to quickly check their e-mail or to print. Each student receives 250 free prints per quarter. Students should be forewarned that the lines can get pretty long during finals week when everyone is printing research papers. If you have a paper due and do not have a printer, you should get it finished a day or two before your deadline for the sheer fact that waiting in line to print it could cause a late paper. This goes against what has become a universal mentality for college students everywhere: procrastination.

The computer network is probably the fastest I’ve ever seen. It’s a T3 connection if you live in the dorms and use the computers on campus. The computer labs are never crowded (except around finals) because there are plenty of computers for everyone. |

The University offers financial aid to students who express need in purchasing a computer, which is quite helpful. Believe me, for the amount of work you’ll be doing on a computer for your classes, it’s in your own best interest to purchase one, or at least have one with you. |

You should definitely bring your own computer. I’ve generally noticed the computer labs to be quite crowded, and I know, in fact, that the University itself advises all incoming students to have a computer of their own. |

There are computers available in labs. They get busy, but not ridiculously so. I have a computer at home, but I usually print on campus. It’s not a problem. There are several labs, half have Macs and the others have PCs. The network is great; everyone gets broadband Internet access. |

In the dorms, the network is pretty good. It’s really fast, and it’s free. We use a lot of e-mail here between professors for class, and we register for classes online. Plus, it’s a pain to use someone else’s. If you have to use the computer labs on campus, it’s not a big deal. The first 200 pages you print are free. |
