Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Davis students are lucky to have such a diverse campus. There are many interest groups run by students and staff, making it easy to get involved with other students of similar interests. There are organizations for different majors (Chemistry Club, Society of Women Engineers, Psychology Honor Society, seele: the literary magazine), ethnicities (Third World Forum, La Raza Cultural Days, AIR, ImaginAsian, Black Family), political affiliations (Davis Republicans, Democratic Party, Liberty’s Flame), interests (SEED, SCTA, Outdoor Adventures), and just about everything else.

Overall, students recognize campus diversity and applaud the liberal community. Students hardly feel threatened by racism, sexism, or prejudice, and credit it to the open-minded student body. Despite the fact that Davis has a reputation of being a bunch of hippie, tree-hugging bikers, the campus is actually pretty diverse. If variety is the spice of life, UCD is always looking for new flavors.

Average.

Our campus is not super diverse- but is not homogeneous. There are many White and Asian kids. Some blacks and others. Overall it is a vary liberal campus so most people are welcoming and accepting. I have never seen a race issue.

Union

UC Davis is known for having one of the most diverse communities on campus. Every race, ethnicity, orientation, religion, and other interests can get along on campus generally. There have been some incidents where a person have taken a joke targeting a group too far but the incidents somehow bring the community together as people come together to resolve the issue. When a group is targeted they don't have to deal with the issue alone because they have the rest of the community to help them.

Facts

Gay Pride

The campus is very accepting of its gay students and even hosts “ Day” in June. The LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender) is a student center on campus that targets the interests and needs of the gay community. Though the campus is very open minded, the gay community is not overwhelmingly vocal.

Political Activity

Davis is known for its liberal and politically-active campus. The bulletin boards are often papered with flyers inviting students to participate in various protests. Often, the protests are for conflicting interests.

Economic Status

Being a major university, UCD has students from very diverse economic backgrounds. Because the campus is so laid-back, differences in socioeconomics are barely noticeable with the majority of students appearing to have come from middle-class backgrounds. More than half of Davis students receive some form of financial aid, so economics play a minimal role in campus life.

Most Common Religions

There are several Christian groups and Asian American religious groups, but most religious activities are held off campus.

Minority Clubs on Campus

African-American Health Sciences Association, Asian Law Students Association, Asian Student Union, Black Law Students Association, Chicano/Latino Medical Students Association, Chinese American Student Association, Cross-Culture Coalition, Filipino Americans in Medicine, Hmong Student Union, LaRaza Student Association, Masala, Mga Kapatid, Mujeres Ayudando LaRaza, NaKeikio Hawaii Nei, Native American Law Student Association, Pan-African Student Association, United Filipino-American Student Association
