College Prowler Take

Off-campus restaurants fare well with Davis students. Some even claim that the dining establishments are some of the best things about the town! An advantage of the college-town arrangement is low-priced food, and students seem to take advantage of the bargains whenever possible. With ethnically diverse options like Italian, Indian, Mediterranean, Asian, Mexican, French, and contemporary California cuisine, downtown provides students with nearly as many culinary options as a more metropolitan city.

Despite Davis’ small size, students have no problem finding palate-pleasing meals off campus. Restaurants are authentic and unique, ranging from the dollar menu at In-N-Out Burger to the more upscale establishments, like Soga’s and Strings. Overall, students seem to enjoy the downtown area and are always able to find a decent meal.

The restaurants off campus are very good. There is a large variety in downtown Davis from Indian to Thai to Italian. The prices are decent, but border on expensive at times.

Great Wall of China, Fuzio,...

Great Wall of China, Fuzio, Sophia’s Thai, Woodstock’s—Davis has some great food, but if you want real Mexican food, and Chipotle isn’t quite cutting it, go to Woodland. It’s a 10-minute drive or bus ride (not the most convenient thing ever), but it is so worth it.

I work downtown and there is this...

I work downtown and there is this city ordinance that was passed to try and keep small businesses alive in Davis, so there are a lot of family-owned places. There are over 350 small businesses here, and, while it’s kind of a drag that there’s no Target or Wal-Mart, all the restaurants make up for it, and you can easily get to Woodland for the convenience items. The Davis restaurants are so unique and of such a high caliber, I’m so glad that downtown isn’t swarming with dime-a-dozen places like Denny’s where the quality rivals crap.

The food is wonderful. Only in Davis will you find restaurants that have poetry readings, live music, dancing, foam parties, and such ethnically diverse food. Delta of Venus is good food, and they kind of cater to vegetarians and vegans. Taqueria Quadalajara—the best Mexican food this side of the border—is great. Sophia’s is an awesome Thai restaurant. They even have this special room where you take off your shoes and kneel on pillows and eat off of a short table.

The restaurants here are sweet! I’ve heard that we’re known for Asian food, but there is a ton of other stuff, too—I love the Mexican food here. Dos Coyotes and Chipotle are affordable, and I always have plenty of leftovers to take home.
