College Prowler Take

Most Davis students feel they have to worry more about locking their bikes than their front doors. Students say they feel safe because of Davis’ small suburban setting. Most students are familiar with the services offered by the school, although many say they hardly feel the need to use them. Students feel comfortable enough to walk alone at night, although that is not an advisable thing to do. Despite the fact that UC Davis seems safe enough, there is still a huge effort to increase security on campus since you can never be too safe.

UC Davis funds a free escort service that starts running every night at 6 p.m. There are self-defense classes on campus and plenty of campus safety phones. Students are still advised to carry a bike light or flashlight, though, because while Davis has some great trees, they also make for some dark areas on campus. There are plans to install more lights in those areas and on the bike paths, but having your own light is still a good idea. Despite the darkness, there is little need to panic. In a town where the biggest crime problem is bike theft, safety isn’t too much of an issue.

Davis is incredibly safe. Other than people stealing bikes, I can’t think of any huge safety issues on campus.

On-campus security and safety are pretty decent on campus. There’s always ways to call for help if need be, and the whole campus, which is huge, is very well lit, even in the remote areas.
