College Prowler Take

Students consistently say Davis weather is extreme. From the sizzling August heat to the numbing November rain, Davis weather covers a spectrum of atmospheric activity, even getting snow every few years. Students are advised to prepare for extreme seasons and bring a wardrobe packed with everything from snow gear to bathing suits. For students with allergies, medication is also a good idea—with all the construction and agriculture, allergies tend to flare up in the spring.

Despite Davis’ tendency to have extreme summers and winters, it gets its share of the unbeatable California weather. Overall, the climate is comfortable. In a town where the sun shines an average of 267 days a year, even Southern California students shouldn’t have to worry about being depressed by the weather.

Summer and fall are hot, so bring lots of T-shirts. Winter through early spring is windy and rainy—bring a coat. Late spring is like summer, except not as extreme. Regardless of the season, Davis has the extremes—keep that in mind.

Davis has four very distinct seasons, and you’ll need clothing for all of them. Definitely bring some waterproof clothes for those bike rides in the pouring November rain—parkas are a must. The poor unfortunate souls who leave their snowboarding jackets at home are destined to ride the streets wearing garbage bags—trust me, it’s not fun. Also, be sure to bring a pair of good gloves: hands are the first things to go numb when you’re on a bike. You’ll also need some light clothes for June when it’s 110 outside—some shorts and tank tops are a good idea. But ladies, keep in mind: you’ll be on a bike, do you really think miniskirts are a good idea? Don’t forget a swimsuit for the Rec Pool and some clothes to work out in, just in case you decide to join an IM team or take advantage of the free gym access. You also may want to bring something nice to wear to the Mondavi Center (it’s a pretty formal theater), a robe if you’re in a communal bathroom, and clothes that you can trash if a rainy day calls for a game of mud football. And of course, what no Davis student can do without—a UCD sweatshirt.
