Bringing a computer is practically an unwritten rule if you plan on attending UC Irvine. Sure, you could technically scrape by using one of the PCs in the plethora of computer labs on campus, but those places fill up fast, especially from late afternoon to evening when everyone is awake and classes are ending for the day. This is a definite problem around midterms and finals when everyone’s papers are due. If you can find a computer, though, it’s good to know that the school’s Internet access and campus network are reliable and rather efficient, all occasional glitches aside. Not bringing a personal computer could be a major issue if you happen to get stuck waiting in line for a computer to finish a 50-page essay that a number of other students at that lab might be doing as well. And you have to pay to print that essay, so make sure it’s free of typos first. Free printing is another advantage of bringing your own computer and printer with you. If you currently don’t own a computer, the University can set you up on a payment plan for one that is more than adequately priced. Furthermore, a personal computer is essential to students who are prone to all-night cramming sessions. It’s nice to be typing in the warmth of your own room as opposed to having to lug your things across campus during the night to one of the 24-hour computer labs.

The network is blazing fast. It seems students are more distracted by computers in class than productive.

The computer network at UCI is great—it's everywhere. There are computer labs and library computers that you can use anytime as long as the buildings are open. During finals week, they are open really late. The labs are very convenient for everyone and not really crowded, but even if a lab is crowded, there is always another lab or library you can head to. I would recommend bringing a computer if you want to take notes in class or you are too far away from campus to use the computers there.

The computer network is amazing, and I never have lag issues. Generally, everyone brings their own laptop just for convenience. Computer labs get crowed during midterm/finals week, as do the libraries.

The computer labs are okay, but people should bring their own computer if they can. Campus Internet is very fast, but be careful not to be too blatant in your downloading habits.
