Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

UCI is one of the few schools in the nation that can say a minority represents the majority of the overall student population. In this case the majority is Asian American, with about half of the student population being of this descent. Although it’s a bit lopsided, diversity is still there when compared to the mostly white, Anglo-Saxon universities throughout America. More than 15 percent of UCI’s student body consists of minorities other than white and Asian. Blacks and Latinos are represented here as well, and some students believe that the campus is growing more and more diverse.

Most students agree that what one makes of their cultural experience at UCI is ultimately their decision. The more you do to learn about another culture, the greater your understanding and perception of diversity. A lot of clubs are designed to educate people about other cultures, and there are also various events throughout the year where representatives of different countries contribute to this education. The end result is an integrated community where people can keep and remain proud of their heritage. Also, if you look around enough at the various food fairs held throughout the year, there’s a fair showing of Greek, Indian, and African American booths, a fun way to celebrate and learn about another culture. No matter what your background may be, you shouldn’t have a problem finding your niche at UCI, and that niche might not be limited to your culture of origin.

Diversity

UCI is being known for "the university of California of Chinese and Indians". This is a relatively true statement. Also, Irvine is known as being a rich city. However, there are plenty of non-Asian students and people of all backgrounds.

VERY DIVERSE

Obviously the majority will be Asian, but I have friends of all ethnicites, economic backgrounds, religions, and even sexual orientations. UCI is very diverse, easy to find same ethnicity friends, also easy if you want friends of all ethnicities.

Facts

Gay Pride

UCI has a Lesbian Gay Transgender Bisexual Resource Center, as well as the group organizations Irvine Queers and OUTspoken, all of which encourage students to be more open and aware about differing sexual orientations among their peers and act as support groups.

Political Activity

Not known for being the most political campus within the UC system, UCI almost finds pride in having minimal student protests compared to Berkeley or UCLA. The passion’s definitely there, but most Anteaters prefer just chilling with the flow, instead of trying to break political waves.

Economic Status

Although UCI does have a student body that varies in socioeconomic diversity, judging by the high number of BMWs and Lexuses (or high number of cars period) in the parking lots, it’s safe to say the majority of UCI students lean towards economically-strong family backgrounds.

Most Common Religions

Since this is the socially conservative and Republican Orange County, it makes sense that Christian groups are by far the most numerous on campus. Beating out the fraternities and sororities in their zealous flyer handouts, it’s not hard to find an eager Christian waiting to salvage your soul just outside the classroom doors when lectures end.

Minority Clubs on Campus

Minority clubs are an overwhelming majority at UCI. Even fraternities and sororities also seem to be ethnically-based. This is readily apparent along Ring Road where most of the Greeks hang out.
