College Prowler Take

As is the case with many of the attractions near Irvine, you’re going to need a car to get to many of the fine eateries off campus. Since Orange County is a fairly spread out, wealthy area, there are always going to be restaurants ranging from fine dining to grab-and-go restaurants looking to satisfy consumers and keep attracting their money. While well-known national chains such as IHOP, Denny’s (make friends with a waitress!), and Olive Garden are student favorites, local spots like Claim Jumper are worth a visit, too. Fear not, though, because there are still many relatively cheap places close to campus, including the ever popular In-N-Out Burger. If this restaurant isn’t around your home area, trust that you’re likely to become a fan.

Since UCI has a booming commuter population, it shouldn’t be hard to find a friend to mooch off of for rides when you’re in the mood to eat out. Restaurants within walking distance from campus tend to be a little a bit more understanding to the student budget, versus the more popular restaurants distributed throughout the rest of Irvine that normally cater to the upper-middle class. Overall, what the restaurants around campus lack in variety, they make up for with low prices.

There are no good restaurants within walking distance. There is pretty good Chinese, Korean, and Japanese cuisines between Irvine and LA, but, yes, you have to drive about 30 minutes to get there.

There is a 24/7 Jack in the Box, which is a staple for everyone. There is not much to find withing walking distance, and when driving, you will find some more fast food spots and occasional restaurants. These places can feel quite far and pointless sometimes. Avoid the fast food in the business district area—the prices are higher since the usual consumer there has deep pockets, unlike college student.

There are the usual fast food places, like Taco Bell, Jack in the Box, and In-N-Out, as well as a Mexican and Japanese restaurants just across the bridge from campus. As far as other places to eat in Irvine itself, I have not explored much because I love to cook at home.

The restaurants off campus aren't very close, but there is public transportation available. The closest places to eat are mostly fast food places. I often eat at Arriba, and when I choose to go the distance, I eat at Elephant Bar.

Off-campus restaurants are okay....

Off-campus restaurants are okay. Right across the street from campus is a nice shopping center with In-N-Out, Jack in the Box, and a few other things. Cha For Tea is a very popular boba tea house, and there is a small Yogurtland adjacent to it. I've heard good things about Le Diplomate, a sandwich shop. For more sit-down type restaurants, you will probably need a car.

Did You Know?

If you go to In-N-Out, you can order off-menu items like grilled cheese and fish burgers. Also, if you like your hamburgers extra messy and stuffed with veggies and sauce, order your hamburgers “animal style.”
