Los Angeles is a big city and there is something for everyone. UCLA is located in Westwood, which is a college city that has many stores and restaurants that students living in the dorms can walk to. It is a very safe place as UCLA is in a pretty upper middle class area. UCLA hosts sporting events and concerts throughout the year, and mostly are free for students. For the nightlife, there are bars for the 21+ students, which are walking distance, or students can drive or grab a cab to go to other places in the vicinity. People in LA are also very nice, ranging from locals, to students themselves, and professors.

I do not live on campus; therefore, I do not know much of the campus policies that can affect social lives of the students. However, academically, UCLA takes cheating very seriously, especially plagiarism. This is heavily stressed in classes, and students caught cheating will possibly fail the midterm or class, and then get reported to the Dean. Getting reported and failing not only will go on your academic record, but it will follow you during your educational journey. This could affect students' possibilities of getting into graduate programs, on which most careers rely.

UCLA is located in a great city. There is something for everyone in LA. Regarding the school, it is a beautiful campus with great academic reputation. Students and professors are both really nice, and there is a niche for every student. There are also many programs, clubs, and extracurricular activities that students would be able to engage in.

As a math major there was not much competition getting in to UCLA as there are not many other math majors. There are many other students in the sciences field which makes getting the classes i need for my major quite difficult sometimes. For admission i believe being well rounded with grades, extra curricular activities, and volunteer work was helpful. I recommend you do things beyond the classroom to give you that extra edge against the competition.

I can never really get a handle on it, but it's Los Angeles, so it's always sunny (:

I found that the off-campus apartments right next to UCLA where a bit too expensive for my taste. I preferred to branch out about 15 minutes away, and found a great place for $650!

It's very expensive, even if you buy a quarterly parking pass. Daily parking is $11 without one. I prefer commuting with the Big Blue Bus line. The quarterly pass is $33 and you can ride any of the BB Buses as many times as you want with your UCLA Bruin Card. You don't have to worry about parking or tickets, and you can study on the bus to or from campus! not to mention, it's better for the environment!

Best in the West! UCLA dining is award-winning! There are 4 different dining halls. One of them was just built and it is Asian-themed with a different cuisine everyday. There are also 3 different restaurants if you want a quick meal to-go. Everything is paid for by one swipe so you just give your card and go. Super easy and super delicious.

Apartments in the Westwood are all expensive. However, they are in abundance, pretty easy to find, and cheaper than living on campus. Start looking early and it will be definitely worth it. Be careful about parking on the streets though. Someone always gets a ticket.

Good Luck – Off campus parking is expensive. You can find free parking if you are wiling to walk at least half an hour to get to class. On campus parking is ridiculously expensive and the lots are not in the most convenient places. I would recommend living nearby and riding a bike or walking. Stay away from cars unless they are an absolute must for long commutes.

If you want to go somewhere not too far from UCLA, you can always walk since restaurants, bars, movies, etc, are all walking distance, If you want to travel further down, there are at least 20 different local buses that take you in all different directions, such as Santa Monica, the Westfield Mall, Kaiser Hospital etc. If you have a license, students are even allowed to rent cars for the day under a UCLA company called "Zipcar" which runs at a 24/7 convenience. They provide a gas card to fill up your zipcard with zero charge, they provide insurance if you somehow get into an accident, and provide a 180 mileage for the day. It costs a little extra more for more mileage but not even to make you cringe. Lastly, UCLA offers van service. Five vans operate on a nightly basis and routinely pick up passengers from five designated pick-up areas every 15-20 minutes: Ackerman Turnaround, De Neve Turnaround, Perloff Hall – west side, Young Drive East – across the street and west of Murphy Hall, and Hilgard and Manning – northeast corner. If you know someone who operates the van service, they are more than willing to drop you off at a different location other than the ones just mentioned. However, it cannot be more than 30 miles from UCLA.

Sun Everywhere! Throughout the entire year, the majority of the time it was always sunny with no clouds. Everyone is always outside, playing sports, taking naps, studying, hanging out with people, campaigning, advertising their clubs and all that college good stuff. However, when Winter comes, it rains heavily at least once or twice a week. Those were the times where I probably never went to class because the classes were so far away from the dorms. I especially did not go if I only had one class for the day. I was not willing to get soaked for one class. Rainy days were usually the dead days on campus. During the Summer, it is excruciatingly hot but luckily, UCLA has at least 4 pools to dive into and air conditioning in all the buildings. Everyone is in shorts and dresses all day long and everyone always had a beach towel around their neck, ready to go swimming after class.

The food is always delicious! We have up to 4 different dining halls. 3 out of the 4 almost contain the same food on different days-fried chicken, hamburgers and fries, pasta, yogurt and fruit, dessert, fish, etc.- but the new one UCLA just built is dedicated to Asian style food such as seafood. If you are on the go and want a quick snack, there are 2 places to go that serve coffee, smoothies, sandwiches, pastries, soup, pizza, pasta etc. The best part of dining at UCLA is that everything is based on a system called "swipes". Depending on what meal plan you buy, depends on the amount of swipes you get. For example, if I decide to go to a dining hall, one swipe allows me to step into the dining hall and get whatever I want. It acts almost like an all you can eat buffet. There's a reason why it's called "The Freshman 15". If I was on the go, I could buy a coffee and a pastry with one of my swipes. Not only that, but if you want to invite a couple of friends or family members to eat with you, you can also "swipe" them in as well. In essence, your card that you "swipe" with, acts as a UCLA debit card.

Drinking Is More Popular – More people drink rather than partake in different kinds of drugs.

Lots of Buses – There are three city branches of buses that reach UCLA there is LA metro, Culver City buses, and Big Blue buses. The public transportation can be confusing at first, but if you research online like mapping out your destinations you will be fine and won't get lost. You can get discount fares in the Big Blue bus and in the Culver City bus swiping your student ID.Additionally, UCLA has its own free BruinBus that travels short distances around Westwood; however they don't run late so don't rely on them at night.
College Junior 2012-09-10T02:28:54Z
Not a Big Issue – Students mainly drink at parties off campus. It simply varies with the group of people they party with. Drugs it would mainly be smoking.

Los Angeles is the entertainment capital of the world. Within just 20 minutes of UCLA is the beautiful Santa Monica Pier, the always busy Hollywood tourist sites and just 5 minutes away is the westwood center. In the westwood center you will find plenty of delicious dining options as well as a movie theatre.

We are always in the top 10 for best campus dining. In fact, before they started including culinary arts schools in the rankings, UCLA was always in the top 3. Needless to say, our dining halls provide delicious meals to satisfy our hungry stomachs. One thing is for sure, if eating a delicious meal is a factor in choosing a college then UCLA is the option for you.

One of the best resources we have on campus is the availability of the computer labs, printing on campus, and how reliable and fast the internet connection is. UCLA provides a map of hot spots that will even narrow down the spots with the fastest connection.

Southern California Sunshine – The stories you hear about Southern California sunshine are true. It rains occasionally during March and April but for the most part, even in Winter, the sun will be shining. Great if you like to be outdoors and at the beach.

UCLA is first and foremost a research institution. With that said, there is a huge variety of research projects going on in every department. No matter what your interests are, chances are you can find an opportunity to participate in research projects that interest you, sometimes even with pay. When applying for jobs or internships or graduate school, these research experiences will be tremendously helpful.

Must Be 21+ – Various bar options in Westwood. Lots more options of bars and clubs in nearby Santa Monica, Venice, and Hollywood. Not many opportunities outside of college parties for those not 21+ though. Plenty of bus and cab transportation to get you where you want to go and back.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
