College Prowler Take
Varsity sports are what initially put UCLA on the map. There’s a reason that Sports Illustrated named UCLA their “jock school of the century.” In retrospect, it seems like every year a national title is won in at least one of the many varsity sports. The strength of the two most popular sports, men’s basketball and football, sets the tone for the rest of the year, especially in the dorms and fraternities. Men’s basketball has the storied lore of Wooden to attain each year, as Pac 10 championships are always demanded. You can feel the anticipation in the air when fall rolls around, as the football team usually steamrolls the early season competition and sets up hope for another long-awaited national title run. Attending the games indulges the student in the frenzied action, and the ticket availability fluctuates with the success of the team. Because of the vast number of things to do in LA, people tend to tune out the major sports if they don’t do so well. If the basketball team is winning, you’d better hope that you bought season tickets; the student section tickets will be more impossible to get your hands on than a nearby parking spot. The sheer joy of having a successful sports program brings out the gym rats in all shapes and forms. IM sports have different levels of competition, usually separated into three levels. Athletics at UCLA are larger than life, and they make the student experience that much better.

The D-I athletes here are like gods. They get amazing privileges, like priority enrollment and priority housing sign-ups. Besides getting to take the easy classes to keep their GPAs up and having their own training facility, they get away with things normal students never would. Some of their special treatment is understandable, but other parts are a bit excessive. Intramural sports are somewhat neglected to the point of the fields not being set up until the game should have already started and the refs showing up late.

UCLA has a pretty big emphasis on sports, especially football and basketball. Considering our history of athletic accomplishments, sports are held in high esteem. IM sports are also a big deal and include a lot of people.

Certain varsity sports are big at UCLA, like basketball and football. All of the athletes work really hard, and even have their own place to workout. If you can't get onto a varsity sports team, there are many intramural sports you can play. This gives a lot of people a chance to try new sports or continue ones they used to play. There's a lot of school pride here and a lot of people participate in sports, but if you don't particularly like to watch or play sports, there are others like you, too.

Basketball tickets are kind of hard to get. You have to order season tickets in advance. IM sports are not that big. There is a large variety of sports, but I don’t really know many people who have participated in them. |

UCLA has lots of school spirit; it’s actually really fun if you get into it. However, UCLA basketball hasn’t been doing so well the last couple of years, but that hasn’t really affected the school spirit. As long as you’re interested in them, IM sports are as big as any other UCLA sport. There are IM sports for pretty much any and all sports. |

Getting Tickets
Tickets are best purchased before the season starts. If you’re a big sports fan, you should snatch up a Bruin season-ticket package. Student packages are cheaper than face-value tickets and will seat you in the student section with all of the other rowdy sports fans. If you don’t grab up one of these packages, prepare yourself for long lines to buy tickets for a sporting event.
Most Popular Sports
Men’s basketball season is always sure to bring about two things: 1) high expectations, and 2) a jam-packed Pauley Pavilion. Reserve your seats early. Football is also a popular sport, but the majority of the fun happens before the game at the tailgate parties.
Most Overlooked Teams
The women’s softball team is constantly winning championships without much of anyone noticing. The same goes for men and women’s track teams, whom are always competitive and rarely receive publicity.
