Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

UCLA’s campus is one of the most diverse in the United States. There are several resource centers on campus for minority students and anyone who wants to learn about other cultures, including the Center for African American Studies, American Indian Students Center, Asian American Studies Center, and the LGBT Campus Resource Center, and there are interesting cultural exhibitions and shows available weekly. There are also plenty of minority student clubs on campus, including the Afrikan Student Union, Asian Pacific Coalition, and MEChA (for Hispanic students).

But, while UCLA is home to students from varied backgrounds, it seems like most tend to mingle within their own ethnic groups. When it does occur, racial bonding is facilitated by intramural sports, parties, and interest-based clubs. Some people are intimidated by ethnic clubs and are hesitant to embrace other cultures, and the vocalization of minority groups can make them seem more plentiful than they really are. But, making a friend for life with a person of another race is definitely possible if you're willing to cross the occasionally rough barrier.

UCLA- as Diverse as Los Angeles County

Being in Los Angeles, UCLA is really diverse. Statistically, Caucasians are a majority, but the Asian ethnicities are very present at UCLA, and most international students are from Asian countries. There is also a strong presence of other ethnicities, as seen through the cultural clubs for Latinos/Latinas, African-Americans, and various Middle Eastern ethnic groups.

Moreover, there are many different religious groups on campus. Although there are many Christian groups, there are also Buddhist, Jewish, Atheist, and Muslim groups on campus as well. There is also a Catholic center near campus, and the center actually hosts many different religious clubs' meetings.

There is also a strong acceptance of the LGBT community, and they have their own office in the Student Activities center.

Mostly Asian and White Students

It seems as though a vast majority of the school is composed of Asian and White students, and though you do see some African Americans scattered around the campus, many of them belong to athlete programs. There is a fairly sized Hispanic base in the school, but it is overshadowed by the overwhelming Asian base.

Huge Diversity

There are many different races at UCLA, but a large portion of the student body is either Asian or white. We have people of all sorts of religion because I see lots of different clubs dedicated to the different religions.

Facts

Gay Pride

There is a LGBT Resource Center on campus, and there is a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies Program. However, with such a varied campus, it's a wonder students aren't more accepting of the many gay pride demonstrations that occur. Nobody's outright hateful of homosexuals, but nobody openly embraces them, either.

Political Activity

Whenever policies are instated that affect campus, you can bet a club will host an all-out protest. Rallies, megaphone-yellings, and marches are commonplace as students blast their respective political ideologies. Though they can get obnoxious, it's nice to be reminded of the aware and active attitude of the student body.

Economic Status

Unlike some top-notch universities, the economic status of Bruins is varied. Nobody's ashamed to disclose their reliance on financial aid, and few flaunt their wealth. People seem to place more emphasis on character than money.

Most Common Religions

UCLA's religious displays are overwhelmingly Christian, though Jewish and Muslim students occupy a large social space, as well. Bible studies are plentiful for those interested, and Hillel (the Jewish student center) bakes and sells very popular Challah bread each Friday.

Minority Clubs on Campus

The minority clubs at UCLA are a political juggernaut on campus—minority students have pride and aren't afraid to encourage change with rallies and protests. There is a political action group at UCLA that mainly comprises the minority clubs and associations on campus.
