Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

UCLA's athletic pride is evident when looking at most facilities. The track is gorgeous, the fields are spacious, and John Wooden Center is beautiful. Wooden, the gym where non-varsity Bruins exercise, is an athlete's dream with an extensive weight room, three basketball courts, two volleyball courts, tons of racquetball courts, a rock-climbing wall, cardio equipment galore, and private rooms offering lessons in everything from karate to salsa dancing. With a locker room and sauna, Wooden attracts A-listers like Magic Johnson and Adam Sandler, who have been known to play pick-up with star-struck students. UCLA's marina is a 25-minute drive from campus and offers competitively priced instruction in sports like scuba and rowing.

But, however nice many facilities are, UC could easily stand for Under Construction. Pauley Pavilion's re-doing is about to get underway, and messy building renovations seem like a regular part of campus life. One thing that hasn't changed in awhile, however, is the gorgeous Powell Library. A hotspot for brainiac Bruins, Powell's cushy couches, plentiful outlets, and vaulted ceilings are a highlight of the studying experience. Nearly a dozen other libraries on campus offer similar satisfaction.

A Little City on Its Own

The facilities at UCLA are incredible. The gym is great if you are looking to working out on the treadmill or playing basketball, volleyball, or squash with you friends. There is also a room for those who want to focus on strengthening themselves by weightlifting. There are also special group exercises that go on everyday from Zumba classes to Bootcamp to Biking classes to Bollywood workouts to Mat Pilates. The student center, while not central to everyone's student life here at UCLA, offers all you need to keep you on task with your academics. There is free printing there, a test bank, and a couple of other student groups that are located there for anyone to go get any information from. Campus activities are bountiful and there is never a reason to say that you are bored here at UCLA, except when you are studying of course. Speaking of studying, there are great locations for people to study in from numerous libraries, to study lounges, to coffee shops, to our beautiful campus itself. UCLA is gorgeous, and although it is the smallest UC campus, it is one of the most stunning and attracting ones.

It Surrounds Me

First and foremost, the facilities on campus are aesthetically pleasing, at least to my eye. When not actually utilizing the resources on campus, I can find joy in just walking around them. I would not consider these places as social grounds or hangout areas but many people frequent the different facilities offered. Moreover, these buildings are kept in a nice condition. Some are nicer than others due to their more recent construction but the more rural feel to some of the buildings house the exact thing I enjoy as a student at UCLA.

Facts

"Green" Initiatives

UCLA joined the "green" bandwagon years ago, when the University began recycling 44 percent of its waste via the Facilities Management Recycling Program. Students are encouraged to recycle in the dorms, and pilot programs are being conducted that instate compost-making programs in some buildings. Housing is also skilled at coming up with incentives that motivate residents to conserve power.

Favorite Things To Do

Between classes, students like to soak up sun, grab some chow, sculpt a stellar body at the gym, or play a round of pool. The pre-screenings at UCLA are always packed, regardless of how a movie is going to do at the box office. There are also events, from speakers to plays, at the North Campus Auditorium each week. At the end of the year, students like to check out cultural shows—there is a show every day from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. in Ackerman Square, but the end of the year is best because the squads have gotten in a lot practice.

Did You Know?

In addition to UCLA's main library—Powell—there are 11 other libraries: Arts, Biomedical, Clark Memorial, College, East Asian, Management, Music, Performing Arts, Research, Science and Engineering, and UCLA Lab School libraries. This doesn't include all the special collections and reading rooms also available.

While there isn't a bowling alley on campus now, there used to be one in Ackerman about 20 years ago!
