College Prowler Take

Greek life at UCLA is utilized by many active members as a center for sharpening social skills and giving back to the community. The Greek party scene is definitely worth checking out (if you can get in) and some of the shenanigans that occur at the Greek houses resemble those that you see on TV or at the movies. Both sororities and fraternities have “exchanges,” or date parties, once or twice a week. For much of UCLA’s student population, especially first-year students, the vein into the Greek body seems like the only way to become socially active and stop watching from the sidelines. As overwhelming as it may seem at times, the Greek system does not dominate the social scene. Many students find solace at the local bars, and for those that can drive, on the Sunset Strip and in Santa Monica.

Being Greek at UCLA is really all in how one perceives it. If you talk to a frat brother, he might tell you that the hazing that he went through was all part of a bonding experience meant to bring together 18 pledges with butt-paddling delight. Talk to a sorority sister and she will tell you that the sheer ecstasy of being treated like a diva-queen for a quarter or two is well worth the process of being chosen. If you’re in a Greek organization, you will definitely have access to your fill of fun each week as they hold open parties each week that are sure to draw masses and masses of wild and crazy Bruins.

I'm not personally involved in the Greek scene, but I have been to one frat party, and I have some friends in fraternities and sororities. It's not a big deal if you're not part of such an organization, but it's not bad, either—it depends on your personality. I say rush to see if you enjoy it, pledge if you do, and continue on if you don't. And, if you don't join, there are still many ways to have fun.

It's very dominant at UCLA. There is a social standing that comes with being in a top sorority or fraternity. But, every individual has the chance to do want they want at UCLA, which makes it a well-rounded university.

Frats have parties a couple times a week, but they don't seem to have too much influence. Greek life is there and strong but not pushing itself on anyone or anything.

Greek life at UCLA fits the stereotype like one of those round little pegs. Sadly enough, it does sort of dominate the social scene.

It’s active, but by no means necessary. Why bother going Greek if you have LA at your fingertips?
