College Prowler Take
Off-campus housing is a major change from the easy lifestyle of the dorms. Finding a place to live in Westwood is easy if you’re willing to pay big bucks. However, it’s worth it for some to be in the mix of apartment and frat parties, along with a minor 15- to 30-minute walk from class. Many students share rooms in Westwood just to make the living affordable. Remember that there is usually only one parking spot per room in the apartments, so if each room in the house harbors two students, parking could become very cramped. The housing prices here are steep, and for the price of a two-room, you could easily find a three-room on the outskirts of Brentwood, West Los Angeles, Santa Monica, or Palms. Moving to a place slightly farther away from campus makes a large difference. Although many warn of the “commute” when living farther from campus, the time it takes to get to school is comparable. If you know the bus schedule, and live near a bus stop, you can get to school in the same amount of time as the people that live in Westwood. The bus is free with student ID, so living outside of Westwood is much more affordable and quiet. However, the price of living off campus and staying involved in the Bruin bubble is often too high for most students to bear, and that drops the grade on UCLA’s off-campus housing.

I haven't lived off-campus, but I know many who do and enjoy it. Most live in the apartments that are a short walk from on-campus housing, and I visit often. That's generally where the party scene is, as well. There are also places to live farther away, but I feel that those create somewhat of a social barrier due to distance.

Getting an apartment is...
Getting an apartment is competitive, just like everything else on campus. Truthfully, the apartments around the campus are owned by a total of four owners—no joke—who have capitalized off the area and the students. In that way, the apartment system has become a monopoly, and the cost is outrageous. For instance, parking has stopped being included into the rent, and now we have to pay an extra $100 a month just for parking alone! But, nonetheless, apartments offer you space and the chance to pick your own roommates. Personally, I think it's a lot better than living in a crackerbox-sized dorm room with filthy roommates who don't respect your stuff.
