Off-campus housing prices are high in Westwood, but for many students, the proximity to classes and activities is worth it—in many cases, the apartments are closer to the dining halls and classrooms than the dorms! Apartments are also incredibly close to the party scene, and many three-room places morph into parties themselves. Parking is usually included, which is a giant plus when considering the miserable parking scenario on campus. To combat steep rent and the competitive vibe of popular buildings, students typically share Westwood rooms that could be found for lower prices in Brentwood or Santa Monica.
Moving to a place slightly farther away from campus has its pros and cons. Although many warn of the “commute” when living farther from campus, time isn't an issue with a car or public transportation. If you know the bus schedule and live near a stop, you can get to school in the same amount of time as people who walk from Westwood. Places like West Los Angeles are out of the UCLA bubble zone, so they boast a quieter and more mature, independent atmosphere. However, for students who crave involvement with their Bruin cronies, the social cost of living far from campus is too high.
