One thing UCLA is not world-renowned for is parking. Students must apply for passes early in each quarter, and they are awarded based on factors such as employment and commuter zip codes. High class standing and a job are needed to secure a parking spot, but spaces are harder to come by than clouds in the LA sky. Many students are experts at faking the forms by pretending to have jobs and reaping the rewards, but since forgery is not encouraged, hit-or-miss parking can be found on Westwood side streets.
If you commute to UCLA, you can apply for the Carpool Parking Permit, which gives priority parking at a cheaper rate. Anyone can buy a night parking pass, which is good every day after 4 p.m. and all weekend. Still, the fact that Bruins can't find reliable parking at their own school is horrible. Daily non-permit parking on campus is $7, and after 8 a.m., you have to park in the lot off campus. There are also campus parking meters, but they only allow parking up to two hours—and good luck finding one during daylight hours. UCLA also loses major points for starting the free parking time on campus at 9 p.m.—and, unfortunately, these free spaces are only effective for extracurricular activities. But, really, what did you expect from a school in the heart of Los Angeles?
