Campus Housing at University of California - Los Angeles

Convenience of Housing

Housing is pretty great, and everything is very easy and convenient for the people that live in the dorms. There are laundry rooms, workout rooms, and the dining halls are extremely close to the dorms. There is also a cleaning service, so the only thing you need to do to to keep the room neat is to vacuum and take out the trash.

I love it. I was unsure about my major coming in, Chemistry, and when I finally decided to switch to Anthropology and that was the best decision ever.

Bruin Spirit

It is not uncommon to see students sporting UCLA apparel around campus. Students often pride themselves on the school's athletic achievements which include over one hundred NCAA championship titles. Alumni, students, and fans look forward to cheering on Bruin Basketball in the schools newly remodeled indoor arena, Pauley Pavilion, set to reopen in 2012.

Asian Girls Everywhere, UCLA.

A lot of good-looking Asian girls. This, however, doesn't meant that all the other types of girls aren't. Everywhere you go, there's a guarantee that there's more than a handful of good-looking, hot, cute, and sexy women in your sight.

Car-Town

I have sort of a love/hate relationship to LA. I can't stand that this town relies on everyone having a car. It loses some of the connections between the different parts of the town because you cannot just jump on a subway train to go downtown.

I like the diversity and the possibilities as a filmmaker, but you cannot always get there without a car.

No Classes, Liberal Professors

Budget cuts mean that getting you classes in an absolute nightmare!!! Or maybe budgget cuts aren't to blame, it's just that there are so many people here! UCLA can be summed up as follows: too many people fighting for limited spaces, whether that is activities or classes, especially classes. I would advise you to come in with AP credits at the very least, and preferably a few college classes so that units will give you a slight advantage in signing up for classes.

The quarter system is great because you get to take so many classes. Once you get sick of your class, it's almost over and a new quarter means new classes. However, the quarter system is not always compatible with your friends' schedules who are on a semester schedule. We start school incredibly late (at the end of Sept), but also get out incredibly late (mid June).

The professors are terribly liberal, some even commmunist I would say.

There are study areas everywhere, but during peak hours they will be busy because, well, like I said UCLA has so many people and we are all fighting for spaces that just aren't there.

Tank Tops and Shorts Weather

I'm originally from Northern California, so the weather here (no matter how much the locals complain) is perfect! I've heard complaints about 70 degree weather, but that's what a good day in N. California is, haha. I never have to wear a jacket here, unless it's raining (which it seldom does).

Greek Life Is Not Stereotypical

Although I have never rushed for a sorority, I am somewhat familiar with the Greek scene at UCLA. Non-hazing policies are strictly enforced, and I have never heard any horror stories about the rushing process from people I've talked to. There are many pre-professional fraternities and sororities that help prepare students for careers in business, law, medicine etc. by providing connections, useful information, and opportunities to perform community service.

Well-Rounded Curriculum

Every department at UCLA is strong and well-regarded. However, many of the South campus professors (those who teach the "hard sciences") are foreign, non-native speakers and thus can be difficult to connect with. I entered as a neuroscience major and switched to economics/english after one year, and found that the professors in North campus are generally much warmer and more articulate. There is a wonderfully eclectic selection of majors and minors to choose from. Many new students fear the large-classroom atmosphere, but the discussion sections attached to each lecture are always more intimate and interactive; moreover, upper-division courses are almost invariably smaller.

The Best!!!

We really do have the best food. While there is a multitude of cafes of all sorts and cuisines on campus that take bruin card, there really is no point not eating in the dining halls and quick serves. We have sushi twice a week, incredible salad bars, smoothies, pizza, sandwiches, chinese food, mexican food, mediterranean food, great pastries, great late night snacks, and anything else you could ever ask for. My personal recommendations: De Neve is great all around, whether at regular meal times of late night. B caf has incredible smoothies and a great caesar chicken wrap. Rendezvous asian-side is big enough for two people to share and is INCREDIBLE.

The Closer the More Expensive but Convenient

The closer the housing is to the school, the more expensive the rent becomes. However, most of the housing I saw were close by to a shopping center. The school provides off campus housing but you would need to ask the admissions office for help regarding which places are open. If you were to find your own housing then it becomes cheaper but it is more of a hassle.

In One Word: Headache

Los Angeles provides adequate public transportation for students wanting to travel to nearby cities. However if you decide to bring a car, you will most definitely regret the decision. Both the campus and neighboring city Westwood are absolutely devoid of parking spots. And if you happen to find a parking spot be wary of where you parking because the parking police hand out tickets like candy.

Sorry, Parking Sucks Here

You have to have a permit to park on campus. You have to apply for and will most likely not get one for the dorms. Most people with parking permits in the dorms have some sort of job. Street parking around the school is a nightmare (in the middle of Westwood). Parking is very difficult. Most people not living in apartments don't have cars unless they have to.

UCLA is one of the most diverse campus in the nation, that applies to its guys and girls too! Here you are bound to meet and make friends with people from different cultures and backgrounds. There are a lot of inter-racial inter-cultural relationships that are fostered at UCLA. Most importantly, people are always down to have fun!

The John Wooden Center is very large and has numerous activities from weight lifting, basketball, to rock-climbing. The Student Activities Center is a building on its own with many student clubs/organizations offices. UCLA has many libraries that are diverse and the architecture is state-of-the-art. Generally, the campus is busy, beautiful in architecture and scenery, and very well-lit.

UCLA is not known for its parties. The big parties are Thursday nights, and even these don't tend to get out of hand on campus. At UCLA, there is no pressure to drink. On the rare occasion others are pressuring you, they aren't people you want to be hanging around.

Review of UCLA :D

I find that the classes I have been taking are not only challenging, but in a way entertaining as well. I have learned a lot from my professors over the three quarters that I have been there, and I can't see myself anywhere else. Yes, the classes are hard, but with a little bit of time and effort, it is possible to obtain that B and that A
