College Prowler Take
The UCLA campus is one of the most secure in the UC system. UCLA employs its own police force, with officers that patrol the campus day and night. In the daytime, UCLA is extremely safe. Some people fall prey to petty theft, but for the most part, crime is not an issue. Although the campus does not have the same overall secure feel at night due to its size, there are several programs in place to keep students safe. Community Service Officers (CSO) are made up of a squad of students that form a police force that uses walkie-talkies in place of guns. They can walk you where you need to go after dark. Simply call 835-WALK, and a community service officer will swoop you up in 15 minutes or less for a walk home. Or if exercise is not on your agenda, you can always wait at any of the designated CSO van stops. The dorms offer Access Control, a service made to deter non-residents from trying to enter the dorms from 9 p.m.–5 a.m. Residents must swipe their ID card to enter a dorm during these hours and sign in non-resident guests to gain access. This is not the case in the suites, which are open to any visitor (or intruder, for that matter) who wishes to intrude. At least once a year, the suites are broken into, and two student-athletes were recently held at gunpoint for about $2,500 worth of merchandise. While acts of violence on campus are rare, they are definitely not out of the question on an urban campus such as UCLA’s.

Here in LA, whenever you see...
Here in LA, whenever you see mansions and huge houses, chances are you are in a rich neighborhood and it’s really safe. We have the LAPD and the UCPD, too. If safety is one of your main concerns, you don’t have to worry about it here. This is UCLA, not USC, you know? |

There is a free campus escort...
There is a free campus escort service all night, every night, and they will walk you from wherever you are back to your residence. There are security phones all over campus that connect you to the campus police, too. I have never felt unsafe at UCLA. I have actually never felt the need to use any of these services, and I don’t know anyone who did either. The campus and Westwood are pretty safe, but there are quite a few homeless people in Westwood who will ask you for money; that’s about it. |

UCLA is located in Westwood,...
UCLA is located in Westwood, California, and is surrounded by million-dollar homes and offices. With all that money, the residents here can definitely afford the services of private security, so it’s safe to assume that UCLA is really safe. There are campus officers patrolling all the time; you can’t miss them. I personally think it’s one of the safest places there is. Of course, it’s not wise to walk alone at night; who knows what drunken, college guys will be willing to do. |

I think that campus security does...
I think that campus security does its job. I’ve always felt safe and never really thought about security until right now. In all honesty, I hated the dorms because they were overly secure. Seriously, do you really need a monitor who’s entering the building between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.? One of the reasons that I left the dorms was because of the security. Nothing is going to happen at UCLA, nothing ever does. |

It’s okay; there are campus...
It’s okay; there are campus security officers who think they’re tough stuff. However, there was a rapist a few years ago, and people were afraid to leave their rooms for a few weeks. |

Did You Know?In 1988, Access Control started because homeless people were living in the lounging areas between the north and south side of the dorms. This service kept out the homeless and cut petty theft in the dorms. Campus officials have worked hard to make students feel safe.
