Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Overall, students agree that UCM is a very diverse campus and that people are accepting of the various groups on campus, whether in regards to minorities or sexual orientation. There are clubs for different ethnic groups, which promote diversity and acceptance by encouraging others to join and participate in their events. There is not too much segregation here. In terms of politics, there are controlled debates between different political parties; students are aware and accepting of different political beliefs. Within their first year here, students tend to learn a lot about other cultures and backgrounds, some of which they had no idea about before they started school.

UCM is considered one of the more diverse UC campuses. There is almost an equal mix of Asians, Hispanics, and Caucasians, and there are also quite a few African Americans and Asian Indians. There does not appear to be any racial or ethnic tension or major conflicts between people of different backgrounds—this goes for political affiliation and sexual orientation, as well. UCM is a very accepting campus; while there are always a few exceptions, they are not really noticeable.

There's a Little Bit of Everything

There's a little bit of everything. There are also various cultural clubs. You don't even have to be a part of that culture to join the club!

Every Color of the Rainbow

Basically, even if you're a unicorn from East Jesus Nowhere, you'll probably find another unicorn from your area. There are lots of Latinos at this school, they're probably at least half of the student body, but there are many other races as well. I've met Hmong people, Chinese people, Vietnamese people, people from all over Africa, people from Belarus, and so many other people on campus. It's great.

Facts

Gay Pride

There is an attitude of acceptance towards the GLBT community, especially with a GLBT organization on campus that hosts events to increase awareness about issues like coming out. There are often movie screenings highlighting these issues and chronicling a GLBT individual's lifestyle. Also, every year the club hosts Pride Week, which includes workshops to create a safer environment, panels with attorneys, and fun mixer games.

Political Activity

The student body is fairly moderate in their political beliefs, with an inclination towards the left. Those who do not have liberal beliefs tend to either be in between as a moderate or not sure. There are not many political rallies or protests, but occasionally there are scheduled debates between different political parties. There is both a democrat and republican club on campus; however, students tend to hear more about meetings and events hosted by the republican club.

Economic Status

Many students benefit from scholarships offered by the school; you will often hear about a student getting a full ride with tuition. On the other hand, some students might not have a full ride, but will get housing completely paid for. The scholarships are often a factor that makes prospective students choose UCM over other schools. However, there are those students of a higher financial standing that do not receive scholarships. Overall, students are very accepting of each other, and there has not been any segregation between upper-class families and working-class families.

Most Common Religions

The most common religions practiced at UCM are Christianity and Catholicism, as shown by the multiple clubs on campus focused on these religions. There is also a Muslim club on campus. However, there are not many apparent differences between these groups mostly because these religious clubs encourage people from all backgrounds and religions to join. There is a high tolerance and acceptance for the variety of religions present.

Minority Clubs on Campus

Minority clubs are particularly active on campus. At least every other weekend, there is a night that focuses on the culture and lifestyle of one particular minority. The club Asian Society is probably the most visible, considering they started the tradition of cultural nights and host other events such as karaoke nights and relay races. Nevertheless, there is still awareness about the other minorities on campus, and all the clubs support each other by attending and even participating in each other's events, making UCM a true melting pot.
