Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

While drugs are inevitably present, most UCM students don't see the drug scene as very noticeable. Alcohol appears to be a bigger problem compared to drugs. Students, including those underage, drink on the weekends at house parties, with some claiming that there is nothing else to do. Some students consider the use of drugs like alcohol and marijuana more noticeable than others. However, people who don’t know about this “scene” due to the different circles they run in are not treated any differently. Too much peer pressure does not occur here; students respect each other's choices—particularly those who decide not to drink or do drugs at parties. Many students believe they can have a great social life without drugs or alcohol.

There were a couple instances a few years ago where drunk students got hurt on campus. For example, supposedly one student slid down a banister and landed unsuccessfully. However, she got the appropriate care at the hospital. Because of incidents like this, the housing personnel has worked hard to prevent such behaviors, enforcing strict actions for those who are caught drinking underage or those drinking in the presence of underage students on campus. If drugs are used by students, they are probably shared more off campus than on, since not many students know about any drug dealings on campus. Numerous students do party on the weekends, but the majority drinks responsibly or has a designated driver.

Drug Free

The campus itself was very clean and there were never any signs of drugs or alcohol anywhere around it.

Drug Scene

The drug scene in UCM is not that bad. Most of the students are good kids. If they choose to drink or do drugs they know to do it off campus. I have seen many people who do it on campus get caught by the resident advisors. They enforce the rules and consequences.

If you want to use drugs, you do, but no one is going to hold your head down until you snort cocaine through a dollar bill, RA's watch out for you and make sure you are safe. More people drink at UC Merced than do drugs, but there are drugs everywhere, this is not UC Berkeley where acid is being dropped on the hour, but this is not Azusa Pacific where you're being taught about the morality of prohibition. UC Merced is a normal college with normal drug and alcohol use. You fall in love with the people here because they literally do not care whether you smoke or not. My friend is still my best friend even though he does not smoke, but he knows i won't pressure him or not be friends with him because he doesn't smoke. You fall in love with the people here because everyone is chill about whatever you do.
