Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Students generally feel secure on campus. The town of Merced itself is safe during the day, but it’s good to be more alert during later hours, when there are a number of people who try to harass students and other Merced townspeople. With the police patrolling campus regularly, students feel comfortable enough to walk around on campus later at night, especially if they have to go back to their car or dorm after a late class or need to talk on the phone outside. While the police are around, they are not overbearing; they keep their distance. There is also an escort program on campus which allows students who do not want to walk alone late at night to call up a trained escort to guide them safely to their destination. However, it is not too common for students to use this service. There are also emergency centers around campus that students can call for help or to signal trouble.

Not all the students are as pleased with the health center’s services. There have been complaints that the personnel do not know how to prioritize appointments based on the level of emergency and over the inconvenience of getting an appointment. The quality of the services is pretty high, though, with the nurses and doctors doing thorough checkups. However, they are not always 100 percent sure what the student’s problem is or how to refer a student to another specialist accordingly. A student’s potential experience with the health center truly depends on the individual’s case; there are many students who have not had any complaints with the health center, yet others who have had a strong dislike for it.

Available and Quick

Security is available as escorts and nightly checks of the blue posts with an emergency button and lamp posts are working. I have called the Cat Cops for escorts or to report something and they are quick and efficient.

Well Organized and Safe

The safety on this campus is very well organized and very reliable. The poise department on campus is always on call and they respond very quickly. If there is any danger, or any suspicion of danger and email and txt message to every student is sent out. The police department keeps the students well informed of any danger on or near campus.
