Tips to Succeed
  • Ask for help when needed.
  • Get involved in activities and be open-minded. Remember, UCM is a fairly new school, so it's also a great chance to become a leader.
  • Go for FREE tutoring. Think about it—more or less it's part of your tuition, so make use of it!
  • Study at least four hours for each class you attend (common formula: three hours per unit).
  • Visit TA and professor office hours.
  • Work first, then leave partying for later. Get your priorities straight and remember the main reason you're at college: to get an education.

Small School

Compare this UC to the other UC, we are the smaller one and I like this because it is easier to get to know people.

Merced

The scenery is quiet and gives you a feeling of peace. Surrounded by pure empty land, Merced is still a growing youth. Students really get to know each other, especially if you see them everyday. The academic programs are alright but i feel there should be more. The campus life is quite peaceful but you tend to get bored when most people go back home for the weekend. And there isn't really anything to do in the city.

New School Focused on Students

Many schools in the UC system have a reputation for not putting the students first, instead putting research first. With UCM being so youthful, it makes it so that the school is still focused on the students and how to create a positive learning environment. I am sure that over the coming decades this will change, but for now it is nice to be a top priority.

Traditions
  • Asian Fest: This annual festival celebrates the Asian diversity found at this school. There are performances by various Asian clubs and different types of food are sold, as well. It is open to both UCM students and Merced locals.
  • Cherry Blossom Festival: Cherry Blossom Festival is a mini-version of Asian Fest. It occurs in early March, around the time the red and white blossom trees start growing on campus.
Urban Legends
  • There's a troubled ghost at the neighboring lake who comes out at night. She is known as the White Lady. It is not clear why she is troubled; some say she committed suicide because she couldn't attain her love, while others say her son was taken away from her.
  • We have two on-campus pet ducks called Ebony and Ivory. Supposedly, they were brought onto campus by a student and now everyone adores them.
