Although support for athletics is on the rise since UCR's move to Division I in 2000, it will take more time before sports gain full school support. In fact, support is actually stronger for some intramural teams than for the varsity teams. But, as time goes on, more students are showing stronger support for the basketball team. Overall, sports are not as big at Riverside as at schools like UCLA, especially since UCR has no football team. UCR even jokes that it currently has an undefeated football team by selling shirts in the bookstore that say "UCR Football—Undefeated since 1975." That was the last year the University fielded a team. The most popular sport at UCR is basketball, and students enjoy attending games. Intramural sports are also well liked and enjoyed by most everyone, including members of the Greek community. In fact, the Greek community has an annual sports week of their own. If you enjoy playing IM sports, UCR is a great place to attend.

Lots of Intramural Sports
C
The sports available in intramural are surprisingly diverse. I've heard that our baseball program is one of the best, but where they play is out of the way for most students, and perhaps they don't get as much fan support. We have a Division I basketball program and a few years back the women's team got into the NCAA tournament. However, I wish that we can recruit a A-list talent for men's basketball. The Inland Empire has produced good talent like Malcolm Lee, and that would get more people to the games and boost the program.

Social Experience of Athletics
D+
Cliques of the school are very segregated. sometimes the greek system encourages "involvement" to include both of these societies, but otherwise, the circles of social groups are very different. It is very hard to get into an athletic program.

Varsity sports are not too huge,...
Varsity sports are not too huge, other than basketball—that's the sport we're known for. We have no football team, but basketball is really fun to watch here, but not too many people get into it. It's not like UCLA, where they're really known for their sports. You'll really only hear about intramurals if you go to the gym. If I didn't go to the gym, I wouldn't even know we had them.

Athletics are becoming more...
Athletics are becoming more popular with Riverside’s entrance into Division I sports. This past year, some games were televised, which helped increase school spirit. IM sports are fairly popular, with many people participating to get their minds off school. |

School Spirit
Over the years, UCR school spirit has become increasingly stronger. Walking around campus, there are a number of people wearing UCR attire, which shows they are proud of their school. Although UCR does not have a football team, a number of students stand strong behind the basketball team and attend the games. Within the last year, a student club specifically aimed at promoting school spirit came into existence. The “Fanatic Braveheart Intimidators,” also known as the “FBI,” attend sports events as a group and have become unofficial cheerleaders for UCR, especially at basketball games.
