College Prowler Take

Most students suggest bringing your own computer if at all possible because it will be more convenient for you. But if you don't, the computer labs at UCR have been remodeled and new labs have been added, so there are now more and better computers for students to use. Although most students have to wait for a computer during peak hours of usage, it is usually no more than 15 minutes.

The lab is also staffed with student workers from ResNet Computing Services, and there is usually at least one student worker in the lab. Some technical difficulties—such as the printer simply being out of paper to a computer freezing—are expected. Usually the student workers are very helpful and knowledgeable and can quickly rectify the problem. However, students who encounter problems in the residence hall computer labs have a much more difficult time getting timely help, especially after hours. The people who work for ResNet Computing Services are overworked and have a number of students to serve. Therefore, it can take a long time after a problem is reported for them to actually fix it. Since the majority of classes require use of a computer for papers, research, and assignments, most students strongly recommend having your own personal computer and printer, as this is one way to reduce your overall stress level.

Bring your own computer. We have a T3 Internet connection, so you can download hundreds of megs of data in a few minutes. I never needed to use the computer labs much, but they usually aren’t full.
