Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

UCR is one of the most diverse universities in the United States. Students gladly take the chance to meet others who are from different groups, especially since tolerance and broad-mindedness is not only welcomed, but expected. Although there are a number of students from various economic and ethnic backgrounds, most tend to segregate themselves. Many fraternities, sororities, and student organizations and clubs are based on ethnicity and religion, and Chicano, African, LGBT, Asian, and women centers are located by the HUB (Highlander Union Building), the main student building on campus.

In the residence housing, there is an LGBT hall, as well as two ethnic-based special-interest halls: the Pan-African Theme Hall for African Americans and the Unete a Mundo Hall for those of Spanish, Mexican, and Latino descents. Despite the separations, the overall culture at UCR is very inclusive, and virtually all minorities are accepted without a second thought. Ultimately, UCR offers a great opportunity for students to broaden their horizons and associate with people outside their realm of experience.

Diverse and Liberal

There are people of many races in UCR, and everyone is mostly respectful and accepting of each other. However, there is still a lot of asians, and they mosrlty just hang out with each other. In my dorms the asian girls dont even talk to the Latino/black girls. Overall i feel comfortable and have met many people i can relate to.

Facts

Gay Pride

There have been a few hate incidences and crimes, but these have occurred in the University Village or surrounding areas of campus, rather than on the campus itself. Students, for the most part, are pretty tolerant around campus.

Political Activity

Political activity comes and goes. When the situation escalates in the Middle East or other big political happenings occur, protesters become visible—some more visible than others. But, overall, political activity on campus is fairly subdued. UCR does have active political clubs for each political party and has several programs that relate to specific issues.

Economic Status

UCR has students from a large range of economic backgrounds. Many students must work their way through school, and others rely on financial aid. An increasing number of students seem to be looking for jobs in order to keep up with the rising cost of tuition.

Most Common Religions

There is not much religious activity on the UCR campus. The majority is agnostic or atheist, but there is a prominent number of Muslims and Christians, too. Like many college campuses, there are religious advertisers, but for the most part, the most visible religious activity that takes place on campus is the weekly prayers at the Bell Tower.

Minority Clubs on Campus

Clubs and organizations, including the fraternities and sororities, often set up tables during the day to share their culture with the campus.

Did You Know?
  • The UCR Affirmative Action Plan works not only to combat ethnic and gender intolerance, but also ageism, specifically toward veterans and individuals with disabilities.
  • Based on UCR's nearly 29 percent Chicano and Latino student population, the University per law is designated a Hispanic Serving Institution.
  • UCR was one of the first institutions to recruit home-schooled and non-traditionally-educated students.
