College Prowler Take

UCR is one of the most diverse universities in the nation, but as diverse as the student body is, it seems that students of Asian descent outnumber everyone else walking around campus. There are a number of students from a variety of backgrounds, but students seem to segregate themselves. Many fraternities and sororities are ethnic-based and target specific groups, but overall the culture at UCR is very inclusive.

This separation continues into the student organizations and clubs, as many are based on ethnicity and religion. In the residence halls, there are two ethnic-based special-interest halls, including the “Pan-African Theme Hall” for African Americans and the “Unete A Mundo” hall for students of Spanish, Mexican, and Latino descent, as well as a lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender hall. Even with all these separations, students take the chance to get to know others who are different. UCR offers a great opportunity for students to broaden their horizons and associate with people outside of their own race.

Riverside might be the one of the very most diverse campuses in the nation, although sometimes I feel a little left out being white!

UCR is known as the most diverse UC school and ranks among the most diverse public universities in the nation. Whites are actually not even the second-most prevalent ethnic group here, but the third. There is, however, a majority female bias. Economically, we range from impoverished first-generation college students to children of privilege who couldn't manage to get in to UCLA. UCR is an interesting campus politically. Students are probably more conservative on average than most other UC campuses, but most who live nearby tend to lean further left.

Very—there are lots of different races. California is a very diverse area, so you’ll find people of all different backgrounds. That’s one of the best parts about living here—racism isn’t as bad, because people are very accepting of all lifestyles.

Facts

Economic Status

UCR has students from diverse economic backgrounds. Many students find themselves working their way through school, and many also receive financial aid. More students seem to be looking for jobs in order to keep up with the rising cost of tuition.

Gay Pride

There have been a few hate incidences and crimes, but this has happened more in the University Village or surrounding areas of campus, rather than on the campus itself. Students, for the most part, are pretty tolerant around campus, and when Prop 8 was passed in 2008, students came out in huge numbers to protest the ban.

Minority Clubs

Clubs and organizations on campus make themselves known through newspapers, posters, and activities on campus. Many of the fraternities and sororities target members of a particular group and wear their letters to show pride. Clubs and organizations, including the fraternities and sororities, often set up tables during the day to share their culture with the campus. There is also an annual International Fair, where different groups sell various ethnic foods. Sometimes, they even pass out samples for free

Most Common Religions

There is not much religious activity on the UCR campus. Like many college campuses, there are people who try to advertise their religion to you, but, for the most part, the most visible religious activity that takes place on campus is the weekly prayers at the Bell Tower.

Political Activity

Political activity comes and goes. When the situation escalates in the Middle East or other big political happenings occur, protesters become visible—some more visible than others. But, overall, political activity on campus is fairly subdued. However, UCR does have active political clubs for each political party and has several clubs that relate to specific issues.

Did You Know?

UCR has consistently been the most diverse UC campus and one of the most diverse schools in the nation.
