Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

One of the best things about UCR is the beautiful scenery. The landscaping is incredibly well-maintained, and thanks in part to the weather, many students find it relaxing to study or hang out outside on the grounds. The buildings are aesthetically pleasing and technologically functional, as well as under constant improvement. The HUB (Highlander Union Building) is both figuratively and literally the center of campus life, as it hosts the main food court and recreational lounges, like Latitude 55—an area solely for leisure—and study rooms. The Student Recreation Center contains the athletic equipment and courts, all state-of-the-art and of great variety, and also offers dancing classes and group exercise routines. UCR is constantly expanding, as well. In early 2011, the Materials Science and Engineering Building (MSE) was completed, and by spring term, classes were being held in its rooms. The Psychology building is also a more recent addition, offering amenities to one of the most popular majors on campus. Besides the HUB, the libraries are the best place for students to relax and work, surrounded not only by books, but frequently updated, modern computers and related accessories. The staff is extremely helpful and serves the needs of someone looking for a complex text for a technical essay or simply some recreational reading.

UCR generally leaves entertainment up to the students, as nearly all social gatherings are organized by student committees, but R'Side events like HEAT and Homecoming are officially sponsored by the University. There are also numerous educational seminars and film showings that maintain the motivation to learn while still providing entertainment. Overall, UCR provides for all of its students' needs and continually does so in an innovative and gratifying manner.

At Least I Won't Get Fat

UC Riverside has a small on-campus gym that offers standard weight-lifting equipment and cardio-machines. However due to its small size, heavy traffic times which, are also about the only available times for working out, I'm lucky if I can nab a treadmill or use the squat rack. There is also a scary foresty area between a good chunk of the dorm rooms and the gym. It's filled with wild racoons, (which I've seen) and shady people doing drugs in the bushes (which I've smelled and heard). Going to the gym when it is dark is usually a bad idea.

Something for Everyone.

There's a lot of different facilities available for students who are looking to work out. Other than the main student recreation center, there are gyms located in most of the housing facilities. There are clubs and organizations on campus that also focus on recreational activities that are for the most part free. Campus activities are present, most again are free for students. The most sought after events are the on campus concerts. Each quarter, a huge concert is brought onto campus free for all students. Artists like, Estelle, Nas, Common, the Plain White Tees and the Ting Tings have been here. Many students choose to hang out at the Highlander Union Building (HUB). There's lounges, free printing, TVs and a food court. They play music through the PR system all day long. When the libraries are full, a quiet place can be found in the courtyards of the sciences end of campus. The patches of grass and trees offer an oasis for stressed students.
