Greek life is prominent, but it does not entirely dominate the school’s social scene. Some of these fraternities are non-Greek based, including service fraternities and sororities. A number of the fraternities and sororities are ethnic-based, targeting a specific group of individuals, but not all do this. The party arena is definitely dominated by the social fraternities and sororities, but it is possible to attend the parties without becoming a part of the fraternity or sorority itself, just as long as you have friends that are involved with it. There is a variety of Greek life to participate in—fraternities and sororities, both social and service in nature. If you are into joining organizations, then UCR is the perfect school to attend because there are a number of organizations outside fraternity and sorority life that also serve the needs, interests, and wishes of students. Greek life at UCR gives students another chance to extend their network in Riverside, make friends, and have some fun. Normal stereotypes of fraternities and sorierities are prevalent in Riverside, but most who become involved with Greek life at UCR believe it is worth it.

Greek life is okay. We do not have Greek houses, so it is not that strong, per se. You do somewhat miss that experience of living in a Greek house, but it's all good. Greek parties, whether at a house or club party, are a good time to socialize and hang out.

It plays a huge role, and so many people are Greek. For the most part, they throw the parties and some of the community service events, but there's definitely no pressure to partake. However, if you decide to try to be a part of one, then change your mind, you're still perfectly fine socially, but as far as Greek life goes, you're blacklisted.

Greek life is actually pretty big....
Greek life is actually pretty big. They always set up their tents in the very center of campus, so you can't miss them. It's hard to have a social life if you're not in a frat or sorority. They throw pretty much all the parties and fundraisers, which can actually be kind of boring. A lot of people can be seen wearing their letters around campus, so it's good to be in a sorority if you really want to make friends fast and have a good social life, though it's possible to have a social life without them—it just makes it easier if you're a Greek.

I didn't rush, but it looks pretty lame. They make giant re-creations of their Greek symbols and place them in the Quad by the Bell Tower, probably in some feeble attempt to advertise their club. The members are creepy, and more than 50 percent of UCR students commute anyway. I'm a commuter.

Greek life only dominates if you...
Greek life only dominates if you let it. You can easily go to clubs and have a great time with friends without ever going to a frat party, but it is fun to go to their parties. Your best bet to meet a frat bro or sis is to go to their frat parties, which are free of charge, and have a blast. Then if you want to join a frat for references or anything, join your senior year because it costs about $200 per quarter, so save your money. |
