Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The security and police officers peppered all over campus make UCR students feel safe and secure. The farther away from UCR, the less safe it becomes, especially certain spots of downtown Riverside. Students are encouraged to travel in groups, both on and off campus. The Campus Safety Escort Service periodically leads “safety walks” that indicate safe areas in which to walk at night and also those that need improvement. Personal escorts are available for anyone who needs them, and virtually at any time, thanks to the emergency call-boxes (ECBs) strategically placed around UCR. Some ECBs contact only the escort service, but blue emergency lines with “call buttons” connect directly to the on-campus police department. Most of this concern is directed toward nighttime activity, but no matter the time of day or week, security measures are ever-present and of top quality.

The health center is a bit off the beaten path, as it's located away from the main classrooms; fortunately, the services it offers are anything but second-rate. Traveling, women's health, and preventive care information is available, and the medical services include those of the dental, optical, pharmaceutical, and laboratory variety. Flu shots are even offered during term, as well as counselors for mental health. The fees are reasonable, though those enrolled in a student health insurance plan have services rendered at either free or discounted amounts.

Just Another Day at UCR

I;m not on campus much, but we always have these emails sent to us talking about students getting mugged and even being sexually harassed by a complete stranger. So in terms of that, I think my school could do a lot better, but then again these events have only taken place really early in the morning which is pretty much the students fault for being out so late. There is room for improvement still.

Police and Safety Services

I feel extremely safe at school since I am signed up for a cool system that automatically sends me alerts on my phone on anything that happens in school even when I am not on school grounds. I thinks this service is great since I am immediately notified of the dangers by the school police.

Arsonists, rapists, and thieves love it here at UCR

Every week the UCPD sends an email with reports of crime on and off campus. Every week you hear something worse than the week before. It starts off with a report of how many cars had windows smashed in before everything but the parking permit was stolen. Next, you will hear of rapes that occurred at knife-point or gun-point (does it really matter which?) on campus- such as on the second floor of the library or in the bathroom of the rec-center. Eventually you will hear about the pedestrian who was shot and killed during a fire-fight between the cops and some random thug at the local Denny's (it's at the University Village about a 3 minute walk from the edge of campus). Suicide attempts happen during spring quarter, and people start setting the campus on fire. No joke. An entire wing of the dorms burned down because of an arson, and molotov cocktails were found spread around campus behind classrooms.

Facts

Did You Know?
  • The Campus Security crime report contains a summary of crimes reported on campus and in other designated areas during the past three calendar years. It also contains references to UC and local policies concerning criminal activity and security on campus. Printed copies are available upon request from the UCR police department.
  • The Campus Safety Escort Service is the only program of its kind across all of the UC campuses, as it is made up mostly of volunteers. It is a service run by students, for students.
  • UCR has one of the fastest running escort services across the UC system, as students generally wait for five minutes or less after calling in for an escort.
  • The Women's Resource Center sponsors periodic safety walks around campus, and this often leads to additional improvements such as lighting in dark places and self-defense classes.
