Quick Stats

School Slang

  • The C-Store: Convenience stores; located in the residence halls and on campus
  • The HUB: Highlander Union Building; the center of campus with restaurants, student services, and study areas
  • Nooners: Nooners are usually held on Wednesday and consist of some form of entertainment, usually a band that shares their talents in the middle of campus during the lunch hour of 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
  • RSO: Resident Services Office
  • UBE: University Book Exchange
  • UNLH: University Lecture Hall
  • The UV: The University Village, which has restaurants, movie theaters, a discount bookstore (Village Bookstore), and a few shops right near campus
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • A car is necessary for going any place off campus, especially at night.
  • During orientation, classes are "first-come, first-served," so register for the earliest orientation for first-choice classes.
  • Get to know your TAs and professors by answering questions in class and going to their office hours.
  • Instructors and TAs are often willing to read through rough drafts of papers if you go to their office hours.
  • Riverside is said to have only two seasons (summer and winter), so it gets very hot during summer, early fall, and late spring, and very cold during late fall, winter, and early spring. Overall, the weather can change from day to day, so plan for anything.
  • Searching for internships takes time, effort, and patience.
Tips to Succeed
  • Be social. Discussion sections often require group work, and student study sessions are always great for preparing for finals.
  • Don't procrastinate. UCR considers research very important, and virtually all classes will require reading of some kind along with busywork. Once you fall behind, it's extremely difficult to catch up.
  • Go to every lecture and discussion. Not every professor puts their notes online, and there will always be information that you will not be able to get any other way. You may even lose participation points or grade levels for skipping class.
  • Take advantage of the libraries and the people who work in them. The librarians are literally there to serve you and can help you find information in many different places. The SCOTTY catalog has great resources online, and some professors will put textbooks on reserve for financially-strapped students.

The most unique thing is how culturally diverse the school is. There is a great variety of cultures that create a more unique learning environment.

Business Class

i never heard of have a class in a real theater before so when i first got the address and room number for the class, i was totally lost. Good thing that my roommates also have the same class and once i stepped into the theater room, i was awed that I'm there for a class and not a movie.

Diverse

My school is very diverse. You don't feel like an outsider surrounded amongst an overpopulation of a certain race. Many are welcoming. There are many activities for you to come and meet others before coming to school. There are many clubs such as the Chicano, Salvadoran, Filipino, etc. that you can join. There are internships and jobs available. The Career Center helps with resume building to find a job.

Facts

Traditions
  • Block Party: A kick-off to the start of the school year, Block Party is the biggest official party for UCR, held in the middle of campus. There are game booths, food, and a lineup of artists and student organizations. There are also photo booths, caricature artists, face painting, and henna tattoo parlors.
  • Bonfire: Basically a time for students to get together for food and fun, Bonfire is called such because the mascot, Scotty, sets fire to a rival UC school's car. There is laser tag, a celebrity DJ, and plenty of food and prizes.
  • Heat: A multiplex music festival, Heat features a lineup of internationally acclaimed musicians. Produced by a combined team of students and staff, it takes place in the central area of the UCR campus.
  • Hike to the "C": Part of Homecoming, this is a guided hike to UCR's famous symbol on a nearby hill.
  • Writers Week: Along with the long-held fact that UCR is the only UC to offer a degree in creative writing, the University has a week dedicated to writers every year. During this week, a variety of writers, poets, and authors are invited to share their thoughts and readings with students and the Riverside community.
Urban Legends
  • A ghost apparently wanders the Pentland Hills residence halls at night.
  • A student supposedly hanged herself in the Rivera Library, and during finals week after midnight (it's the only library open that late), there have been reports of strange occurrences, like odd shadows, moving books, and feelings of a foreign presence.
Did You Know?
  • Most on-campus events feature free or discounted admission to current undergraduate students who present a valid UCR ID.
  • KUCR is UC Riverside's own radio station, at 88.3 FM.
