Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Parking at UCR is a challenge in and of itself. UCR is a major commuter school, and since living off campus is cheaper than in the residence halls, many students rely on their cars to get them to campus. Nightlife is usually centered downtown or out of town, and students use their cars for those purposes, as well.

Transportation & Parking Services is quite strict on regulations, and it's unwise for a student to try to park illegally, despite any convenience. The main student parking area is Lot 30, which recently added even more spaces on the sides of the entry streets and along the edges of the three main regions. Permits can cost a pretty penny, with residence halls offering among the highest rates of undergraduate parking passes. Off-campus parking is recommended for those on a budget or who simply don't want to deal with the hassle of finding a good space, so expect a long walk.

Close-By and Ticket Crazy

Riverside is largely a commuter school, so finding a good spot can be tough to find, but you will find a spot. The way the school's laid out, none of the lots are that far from campus, so no matter where you park your still a lot closer than most other public campuses! The do tend to give a lot of tickets here.

Not the Worst, but Definitely Nowhere Near the Best

Permits are extremely easy to get and fairly priced, especially for commuters and especially compared to other schools: about $90 a quarter. Tickets can be a pain, especially around the campus apartments, but as long as you read all the signs and pay attention you won't get a ticket; plus the tickets are not the most expensive, average is $33. A car on campus is not an absolute necessity, but if you want to do anything fun or go to the Tyler mall, you will need a car, since bus rides can take about 2 hours, round trip. The worst thing is availability of parking spaces, especially Fall quarter; you should probably give yourself an extra 30 minutes to find a spot and walk to class. Compared to what I've heard about other schools, it's not that bad, but it's still very stressful.

Getting a Parking Permit

Parking permits are available for purchase online or in person at the Transportation & Parking Services building. A credit/debit card is necessary for online purchases, or the fee can be billed to your student account. The permit is then either mailed to your off-campus dwelling or can be picked up at the Transportation & Parking Services main office. Note: Some residents may end up on a waiting list when applying for residence hall parking spaces.

Did You Know?
  • Student "Gold Permits" are the least expensive and have the largest lots.
  • After 4:00pm and on weekends, students are free to park in all lots with any permit.
